The Fated Rejection
"I, Alpha-elect Xander Vance of the Crescent Moon Pack, reject you, Aria Hale, as my fated mate and future Luna."
The words sliced through the crowded pack hall like a silver blade.
Aria stood frozen in the center of the polished wooden floor. The joyous chatter of her eighteenth birthday celebration died instantly. Hundreds of pairs of eyes shifted from admiration to cold, mocking judgment.
She looked up at Xander. He stood on the raised pack dais, his tall, muscular frame imposing, his dark hair immaculate. His sharp jaw was set, and his golden alpha eyes held no warmth. Next to him stood Sienna, a high-ranking Alpha’s daughter from a neighboring territory. Sienna smiled triumphantly, sliding her manicured hand into Xander’s arm.
"Xander..." Aria’s voice was barely a whisper, her chest tightening as the invisible mate bond between them frayed and fractured. The pain was physical, a burning agony in her soul. "Why?"
"Look at yourself, Aria," Xander said, his deep baritone echoing off the walls. "You are an Omega. Your lineage is weak, your wolf hasn't even materialized properly, and you spend your days in the pack kitchens. A true Alpha needs a powerful Luna to secure his borders. I cannot lead the strongest pack in the region with a weak link at my side."
Whispers erupted across the room.
“An Omega trying to claim the Alpha?”
“She should have known her place.”
“Sienna is much more fitting for a King.”
Aria swallowed the lump of glass in her throat. She clenched her fists so hard her nails dug into her palms, drawing blood. They thought she was weak. They didn't know that she had purposefully suppressed her wolf's aura for years just to survive the pack's brutal political infighting.
She stared directly into Xander’s eyes. She didn't cry. She refused to give them the satisfaction of seeing her break.
"You are rejecting a bond given to us by the Moon Goddess for political power?" Aria asked, her voice steadying, shocking the elders sitting nearby.
Xander’s eyes flared with a brief flicker of hesitation, his inner wolf growling at the rejection of its true mate. But he suppressed it, tightening his grip on Sienna. "The pack comes first. By morning, you will pack your things and leave Crescent Moon territory. You are exiled, Aria. If you return, you will be treated as a rogue."
Sienna smirked. "You heard the Alpha, Omega. Go back to the kitchens and pack your bags."
The humiliation was complete. Aria took a deep breath, drawing on every ounce of inner strength she possessed. She looked Xander dead in the eye, the faint, golden spark of her hidden, ancient wolf flashing in her pupils for a microsecond—though no one noticed.
"I accept your rejection, Alpha Xander," Aria said clearly, hissing the words past her teeth. "May the Moon Goddess have mercy on your pack. Because I won't."
She turned on her heel and walked out of the pack hall, her head held high, leaving a stunned silence behind her.
Two Hours Later
Aria’s small cabin at the edge of the woods was dark. Her bags were packed on the bed. The agonizing pain of the broken mate bond was pulling at her chest, making it hard to breathe.
Suddenly, the front door was thrown open. A heavy, intoxicating scent of pine, rain, and raw power flooded the small room.
Aria spun around, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Standing in the doorway, drenched from the sudden midnight downpour, was Xander. His shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his breathing ragged, and his eyes completely black. His inner wolf had taken full control.
Before Aria could scream, Xander slammed the door shut, locked it, and pinned her against the wall, his massive hands gripping her waist.
"Xander, let go—"
"Silence," Xander growled, his voice vibrating against her skin as his lips hovered centimeters from hers. "My wolf refuses to let you leave."
