Chapter 3

'Baby I want you to meet someone.' 'Are you going to make me meet Ellen Degeneres?' He narrowed his eyes at me playfully. 'It's not that easy to meet her you know.' I laughed. 'Who then?' 'I want you to meet Jaylein. She's my childhood friend. We went to kindergarten together.' 'Uh-huh.' And Jaylein was gorgeous. Stereotypical blonde hair, tanned skin and blue eyes. Yup, exactly how the books says. 'Hi, you're Kate right?' I didn't miss her eyes assessing me from down up or her hands being too touchy and all over Caleb throughout our whole outing. I was the one feeling like a third wheel. --- "Oh my God, is that you Kate?" Her blues eyes sparkled just like how I remembered them. "What are you doing here?" "I'm the new secretary." I spoke that last word in a softer tone. I always build around myself a more successful aura. Promising to build my own hotel. She snickered but redeemed herself fast. And it hurt every time I remeber that Caleb left me for her. She never saw me as competition and I was propably more of a joke to her now. I was only just a secretary and she's the head lawyer of a successful man and a successful business. "I see you're still running around Caleb like a lost puppy." Her mocking demeanor straightened. "You didn't actually believe that he would stay with someone like you for long. Sweetie you-" Her words were cut short with Brian's voice calling from down the hall as he made his way towards us. "I see you've met Jaylein." "I'm well acquainted." I replied dryly. Brian gave me a confused look but he soon dismissed it. "Are you finished with your work? Good for lunch?" He asked excitedly. Jaylein scoffed my way before turning around to leave the place. I turned my attention back towards Brian, trying to dim the anger I felt burning in my chest. "Yup. Let's go." ---- Brian took us to the hotel's restaurant at the very bottom floor. "So, I'll ask you again. How was your first day so far?" I took in a deep breath. Now I have something to reply with. "Well, it wasn't very bad actually. And just before you came I was down at HR. I met a few interesting people." I answered remembering the trio I met. "Oh that's actually great. You know, it's always good to make as many connections as you can. It makes you powerful. People in any industry rely majorly on connections to get things done." "You mean that it helps you get around without too much begging and giving out expensive bribes." I smirked. Brian laughed out at my blunt view. "Yes, yes. That's exactly it if you wanna blunt it out." "Good afternoon Mr. Pears. I see you have new company today." A young waiter cut us short. He was wearing black dress pants, a white button up shirt and a black vest on top of it. A white, neatly placed towel over his arm completed the look alongside the pen and notepad. " Ah, afternoon Jake." Brian replied with a wide smile like he knew the guy. "Yes, this is Kate, Mr. Frost's new secretary." Brian introduced. "Oh finally." I raised my eyebrows at Jake's reaction. "I told you, choosing a new secretary was the hardest job we've ever faced for a while now." Brian explained but I was more confused. Why was it so hard? "So, Jakey, what's on the menu today?" "Well, a Chinese chef is actually on a visit today and he's making those delicious sweet and sour chickens." Jake replied, his eyes rolling to the back of his head at the memory of the chicken. "I recommend you getting this today since he'll be leaving tomorrow." "Great, I'll have that." Brian spoke and looked at me. I nodded my head. "Yes, me too." "Anything else?" Jake asked as he jotted down the order. "No thank you." I replied politely. "Oh Jake, I've been speaking to Mrs. Marez about that vacation you wanted, and things are looking pretty." Brian winked at Jake as he finished. Jake's face lit up like I've never seen before on anyone. "Thank you. Thank you so much Mr. Pears. Thank you so much." Brian dismissed it with a wave of his hand and a soft smile. "Don't mention it boy. Come on, go get us that chicken." "Yes of course, right away." Jake nodded his head vigorously and left. I looked at Brian, not noticing the small smile creeping up on my face. How sweet of him. He doesn't come off as the kind, generous type of guy and yet here we are. "What?" He asked when he noticed me staring. I blushed crimson. "You just surprised me with your actions." I replied honestly. "Oh you meant Jake?" I nodded. Jake came back with a basket-full of mouth-watering garlic bread. I looked up at him in Co fusion but he had his full attention to Brian. "Compliments of the chef." Jake winked at Brian before leaving quickly. Brian turned his gaze to me and smirked. "Connections." And it clicked in and it made me laugh mainly at my own self. Brian and I went on talking about random things about ourselves and about work. "So, any boys?" Brian asked suggestively. "Well, there was someone. But it didn't work out." I replied vaguely. I knew I wasn't obliged to tell him anything but it was nice talking about it to someone else besides my mom, even if it was just around the bush. "And why is that? What happened?" "Honestly, I myself am not sure what had happened. He just decided to leave." I shrugged my shoulders like it was nothing. "This makes no sense." Brian spoke more to himself. "Do you still like him though? I mean, when they leave all of a sudden, it gets even harder to let them go." As soon as his words hit my ears, my eyes caught the sight of Caleb entering the restaurant. Our eyes met for a brief second but I choose to turn away. Brian's words were true, but I never really gave it much of a thought. All that I had towards Caleb those past years was pure anger. I was angry at him for leaving like that. For letting go so easily and not even telling me exactly why. I was angry at myself for believing in him. For trusting him. For loving too damn much. I met Brian's gaze. "I don't know. I honestly don't know. I'm just angry." Brian opened his mouth to say something but never got the chance to. "Miss Olsen, it's only your first day and you're already slacking past your lunch time." Caleb spoke coldly. "Oh, Adrian it's my fault." Brian jumped in as he raised from his seat. Caleb payed him no attention as his cold stare remained fixated on me. "Follow me to the office. Now!" His tone was angry and his face red. I tried to keep in my composure and not fight back. No one knew my relationship with him and it would raise questions if the new secretary butted heads with her boss like that. Caleb turned on his heels and I quickly got my purse to pat for the food but Brian dismissed it and told me that it was on him thus time and that I had to hurry after Mr. Frost. I whispered a thank you his way and joining in on Caleb's footsteps towards the elevator. As soon as we stepped into the metal box, Caleb held my arm and pushed me against the wall. And before I was able to react, he had his fist slammed against the wall near my face. The part of me that still trusted Caleb that he would never hurt me didn't react, while the part that didn't know what to think anymore flinched very slightly. He kept his angry gaze at me while I kept my own gaze into his eyes, unwavering, determined, brave. His breath slowly calmed down and our journey up felt faster than necessary as the elevator dinged. 'You're now on the fiftieth floor.' The automated robot spoke the obvious. Caleb removed from beside my head, his eyes never leaving mine. I didn't know how to decipher what they screamed at me. For the first time, I couldn't understand his eyes. Caleb took a step back before finally averting his eyes and leaving the elevator leaving me just as confused as when he asked for our divorce. I left the elevator hurriedly after him before the doors closed. And without a word, Caleb went into his office and I got back to finish some of the work I had left. But I couldn't concentrate. What the hell was up with him? Yet I didn't dare ask neither did I want to care about knowing.
