Chapter one
Fidelia’s POV My finger hovered over the mouse, my heart pounding in my chest as the sweat from my palm dripped down my hand. I have been staring at my applications for the past one hour. Five applications, five companies—each making a decision that could shape my future. But only one made my pulse race. “Santorini”. The name alone stirred a mix of excitement and dread, a company revered and nearly unreachable, the kind of place interns only dream of. I knew it was a long shot—practically impossible. Yet here I was, about to submit, a shaky hope blooming where my usual logic warned me to tread lightly. Tomorrow, I'll walk across the graduation stage, my steps toward a new life. But tonight, my future was just one click away. With a deep breath, I pressed the button. Days later, I opened my email and froze. My eyes widened as I stared at the subject line, the surprise and excitement that groaned in my belly as I read each word “congratulations!” Intern's offer from the Santorini group. I screamed at the top of my lungs. I couldn't believe it. The least expected has chosen me out of the thousands that apply every year, me! As quickly as possible, I accepted the offer before my brain could catch up with the surreal moment. And like that, I was officially an intern of the Santorini group. The following Monday morning, I was up as early as 5 am before my alarm as the adrenaline pump was coursing through my veins. I immediately started getting dressed as I was instructed to be at the office by 7 am. I was still staying in the tiny apartment I rented off campus during college for now, but with this new job, I'll have to start looking for a new place close to work. By 6:20, I was already out the door and on my way to the subway. The ride to Manhattan was a blur, my excitement and nerves mixed as I rehearsed my introduction speech in my head. I got to the company's building by 6:53, and it was so surreal, made with class that reflected the sunlight and so high up in the sky. Taking a deep breath, I stepped inside and was greeted by a warm smile from the lady by the desk. Good morning, how can I help you? The receptionist asked. Hi, I'm Fidelia, the new intern. Can you direct me to the HR office? I replied, my voice heavy with nerves. Oh! Of course! Take the elevator to the 10th floor. The HR office is the third door to the left. " I'm Kate, by the way. “ Nice to meet you, Kate, and thank you. I said, returning her smile. As I made my way to the elevator, I couldn't help feeling optimistic. So far, I like my experience. Fidelia… I'm so pleased you could make it. I turned to see a woman in her mid-thirties approaching with a welcoming smile. She extended her hand, Hello! I'm Earl, her tone is professional yet warm. " Good morning ma'am, I said. Of course, I could make it. " It would be a waste not to accept an offer made by one of the most sought-after companies in New York. "I know, but our offer was sent rather late, hence my worry, she replied. No worries ma'am, I'll accept it anytime, any day. She laughed," I like your enthusiasm. I guess we indeed picked the perfect candidate. She said, "You're really going to need one if you're to work here. Come on, let's step into my office, so I'll go over what you can expect here at Santorini. As we walked, her words echoed in my mind. ” I guess we indeed picked the perfect candidate. " Could I really be what they were searching for? But well, I graduated at the top of my class. Perhaps I was exactly what they needed. Once inside her office, Earl leaned forward, her tune businesslike. Her role here is quite straightforward. You will be assigned a manager who will oversee your tasks and give you directions on how you are to go about things in the office. Additionally, we advise interns to assist other employees when possible. It's a great way to gain a broader range of experience. "Yes ma'am, I understand"I said, nodding. Good, Earl pressed a button on his desk phone. A moment later, a woman entered the office. Anna, this is Fidelia, our new intern. Earl said, Fidelia, this is Anna, your manager. Anna extended her hand," Welcome to Santorini, Fidelia. " I'm glad to have you on my team. "Thank you ma'am, I'm excited to be here," I replied. "Come with me, and I'll show you around,” Anna said. She led me to my work station, a cozy, well-organized desk at the side of the office. It was neither grand nor modest, just the perfect size. From there, she walked me through the staff kitchen, meeting rooms, and she finally introduced me to my colleagues. “Everyone, this is Fidelia, our new intern,” Anna announced. A friendly chorus of greetings met me and I couldn't help but smile. So far, everyone seemed welcoming. The tour ended with a final set of instructions. As I sat at my desk, taking it all in a single thought echoed in my mind: This is just the beginning.
