Chapter 18: My Room Again

She fell just like a broken bird.
One single moment, Alex was standing there rigid and stiff. She looked defiant even while she was being disgraced in front of everyone. But in the very next second, her knees just buckled. I moved my body before I even had the chance to think about what I was doing. The entire world seemed to narrow down until all I could see was her body tipping forward toward the cold ground. I felt a sound tear out of my throat—it was her name.
“Alex!”
I lunged forward and caught her in my arms just before her head struck the hard, frozen snow. As I pulled her against me, I realized she was frighteningly light. It felt like I was holding nothing at all. Her body was completely limp, and her breath was coming in shallow, ragged gasps
