Walking out of Kaelan's room felt like I was finally ripping myself free from a trap. It was a trap that had already sunk its sharp teeth into my skin. My chest felt like it was on fire. My vision started to get blurry at the edges because of the hot tears I refused to let fall. Rage thundered through my veins like a storm. Each step I took made a sound that was far too loud in the empty corridor. It felt as if the castle itself were mocking me. It felt like the walls were laughing at me for ever thinking I could belong in a place like this.
Behind me, I heard the sound of hurried footsteps. They were hitting the floor fast.
“Alex! Wait—please just wait!” Kaelan’s voice sounded cracked. He sounded desperate and out of breath. “I am so sorry!”
