Chapter 36: Dinner with Enemies Alex I shut the heavy wooden door behind me. I did not bother to lock it because it would not make a difference. I sank onto the thin straw mattress that served as my bed. The sound of the door closing echoed too loudly in the small, cramped cellar. The room was cold and damp, just like always. My chest rose and fell in fast, shallow movements. My breath was uneven. I could feel my fingers digging into the rough, scratchy fabric of the mattress beneath me. My hands were shaking.
