Chapter 37: Sorry Isn’t Enough Alex I lay flat on the thin straw mattress. The straw was old and poked through the thin fabric of my dress, but I was too tired to move. I stared up at the cracked stone ceiling. I looked at the lines in the rock as if they might finally give me some answers about my life. A single spiderweb clung stubbornly to one dark corner. I watched it tremble every time a cold gust of wind slipped through the broken window. My birthday was so close now. It was only a few days away. It was close enough that I could almost taste the freedom on the air. I just had to wait a little longer. I told myself that I just needed a little more endurance.
