Chapter 32: Caught

I walked slowly toward Sam. Each step I took made my boots sink deep into the fresh, white snow. The forest felt far too quiet around us, as if the trees themselves were holding their breath and waiting for something to happen. My heart was hammering so loudly against my ribs that I was sure he could hear it in the silence.
“Why are you here, Sam?” I asked him. I kept my voice as low as a whisper. “Do you have some kind of death wish? Do you want to get caught?”
He did not flinch or move away from me. He just stood there and watched me approach.
