Chapter 7 FarlaWhen the day of Farla’s marriage dawned, the bride was nowhere to be found. She had slipped away in the night, leaving a hurt and bewildered groom and a disappointed village. Only Farla’s mother was not surprised. She had watched her daughter closely over the past weeks and knew, though she said nothing, that Farla’s heart was not in the marriage. She was not sorry that her daughter had backed out of it, only that she had done it the way she had. When Farla left her home she had no idea where she would go. She just knew that her life as an ordinary village wife would not work out, and the only other life she was familiar with — as a Temple priest — frightened her.
