DAMIEN’S POV
I have never seen anyone so desperate before, and of course, she would have her motivations, but in all honesty, I have never hired an assistant who did not look or dress hot—like my secretary, Clara, had said. But it suddenly made me furious that she spoke to the lady like that.
I swear to God, there was something familiar about her that I couldn’t place yet. I can’t think of how I would have met someone like her, but I wanted to prove Clara wrong, so I made up my mind to let her attend the meeting, and I would decide what to do with her from there.
She was quiet throughout, and when the meeting was over, I stood and walked toward the door. Of course, she followed me.
“Yes, come with me.”
She did, and as soon as she entered my office, she closed the door and remained behind it. I noticed something caged in the way she looked at me from the moment she closed the door, but I had no idea how to point it out.
“Have we met?”
Something flickered in her eyes for a minute, and one of those flickers looked like disappointment.
She shook her head.
“Alright. I know you have your reasons for begging the way you did, and I also know it may not be something I have to know. So, I have decided to hire you for a trial month and see if you are fit to be my assistant.”
Her expression lit up immediately, but I held up my right hand.
“Not so fast. To work with me, you have to look the part. I and the company have a reputation to uphold, and looking like that…” I looked at her oversized skirt and her white shirt, which she managed to tuck in but anyone could see was old. I can’t blame her; she may not have another. Yet, I need to make a little change.
I picked up my phone and called Clara. “Hi, I need you to take my new assistant and get her some clothes.”
That was all she needed to hear.
“You’re not expected back here till tomorrow, so clean up. See you tomorrow.”
“Thank you so much,” she said, but I was already looking at my laptop, and she became the last thing on my mind… I wish.
Everything about her seemed like a damsel in distress, and I wanted to help her so badly—know why she was like that or something—but I couldn’t bring myself to let my guard down. Who knows? She may not be who she seems.
The door opened and Clara walked in, in her short skirt that reached mid-thigh. She leaned across the table as I handed her my card, revealing her huge cleavage. She had been doing that for a long time, but I never found myself attracted to her at all, and it was sad because she had killer everything.
“Get her something to make do with for every day of the week, and return here by three, latest. We have some work to do.”
Clara nodded. “Alright, boss. I’ll be back here with you shortly.” Her voice rang like music in my ears as she turned and began to walk away seductively.
My phone rang as soon as she left the room. “Yo, man, I heard you hired an assistant. Are you so desperate for help? I’m just hours away.”
“Yeah, right. After spending so long being sick, you think I would believe or let you work as soon as you’re back? You’re daydreaming.”
“But boss…”
“Don’t do that.”
“Bo—”
“Complete that and I will make sure you never come back here.” It was a joke, but I was actually a bit serious. Tyler loves to get on my nerves, and as my vice president and best friend, he has all the keys to do that. He had recently been in an accident that almost cost him his life, leaving him on the hospital bed for over two months.
And now, he would be discharged today.
“Who is coming to get you?” I asked. I knew he wanted me to, but he had such a bad relationship with his family—which is a long story—and my only goal is to help them fix it. But even while he was sick, he insisted they didn’t stay with him.
“Come with a little food, huh? I’m starving.”
He said that, and I chuckled as I got up and began to prepare to leave the office. He made jokes about how boring it had been for him and how I had been living the best of my life until he came back—only to find out I had an assistant now.
“So tell me about this assistant. I heard she’s nowhere near your spec in staff, yet you hired her.”
“Who is feeding you all this information?”
He chuckled as he began to tell me many other things he knew that I had no idea he did.
“You know what, I think I’ll let your parents come get you.”
“Or… I could have your new assistant get me. You know, it would be a way to get to know the new—”
“What the f**k are you on about? The new assistant is none of your business, so leave your nose out of her matters.”
“Says who?”
“Says your boss, who is gonna kill you if you say one more word.”
He went quiet immediately, then we both suddenly burst into laughter after a few seconds.
“Even I almost believed that.”
