Blurb

Five years ago, she slept with a man in the dark and ended up pregnant. She never knew who he was, but her life came to a stop—huge debt and no one to help her.

Her child was taken from her because she was considered incapable of taking care of him until she was able to work and make a certain amount of money, and also get a better apartment. She went job hunting, and fate brought her together with Damien, the man who was the father of her child.

Everything about him screamed danger and also brings memories from the past yet he refused to acknowledge he recognized he until he almost lost her. He wanted an assistant not a memory from the past and he must do everything to stay on track.

Would he choose her now, or run away like before? Or what if the problem now is her not being able to fight her attraction for him, and how her passion could consume her?

ChapterOne
MORGAN’S POV I heaved a deep breath as I entered the elevator. Few minutes to the moment that would decide if I will be able to get custody of my kid or not. The sound of the elevator opening brought me back to my senses as I had already begun to daydream of how things could go. I took one step out and then another and that was the moment I realized how fast my heart was thumping. “Get out of the way!” A harsh female voice cursed behind me as the sounds of heels clicking brought a dark-haired bimbo to my sight. I looked at her from head to toe. She is definitely looking for trouble but I am not here to find one so I looked down, apologized and began to leave. “And where do you think you are going?” ”Excuse me?” I replied, slowly. “The cleaner’s corner is down the hall.” She pointed behind her and as I tried to explain that she had it all wrong, my eyes caught the time behind her and instead of replying, I turned and headed the opposite way and stopped when I reached the receptionist. “I am so sorry I came late for the interview.” I had expected harshness but the lady looked at me with compassion. “Oh! It’s alright. You’re just in time. Just fill out this list and have a seat with the other applicants.” I heaved a sigh of relief as I filed the form and looked back to see about a dozen other applicants. This had to work or this would be the end. I have been fighting so long for custody of my son and the only thing that would make me win is if I had money to hire a good lawyer to plead my cause. Soon, I was called into an office where a woman sat, looking very disinterested. “It says here that you graduated with honours yet you don’t have any experience working, why?” Of course, they would ask. It has been five years and the five years have been hell for me but that is not something I want to explain to her. It is not that she would understand anyway. “I have taken some very small works but nothing much to put in my application.” She adjusted the small glasses that sat on the bridge of her nose and cleared her throat while keeping her eyes in my credentials. “Why do you think you are fit to work here?” My head went blank because honestly, I did not think of that. All I had in my mind was just to get a job. I had seen the vacancy for an executive assistant and the first thing I thought was it required just to dress well and to speak well and that my good grades would be a bonus and then it has to be a lot of money because Damien Corps was a big company. And now, it is looking like I don’t even stand a chance at all and like I may lose this race even before I started. I am starting to lose focus and this is not good. “Can I be excused?” She raised an eyebrow for a brief second but nodded then I rushed out to catch my breath. This could go wrong in many ways but I would love to get even the smallest chance and right now, the only thing standing in my way is my fear that I will not get the job. I sighed again the millionth time before stepping inside again but this time, the woman wasn’t the only one in the room, there was someone else and his back was to me as he seemed to be engaged in a serious discussion with the woman. I cleared my throat to let them know that I was there and they stopped talking as they both turned to me, the man, slowly. My eyes took in every bit of the handsome, obviously someone with very high authority, strict-looking man who stood before me in a dark tailored suit and an expression that says absolutely nothing. “I’m sorry, Miss Morgan, this interview is closed. The boss will no longer be taking an assistant.” “What?” No, it is not supposed to turn out like this, no. “Please, is it something I did? I am sorry, I can start again and I will not hesitate this time around if only you will give me a chance, please. I am so sorry. I really do need to get this job.” The room was silent and yes, I knew this was the most unthinkable thing but I really need this but seeing as they were not responding, I rushed to the man who seemed to be the one in charge and knelt in front of him. Here goes my pride. The cold floor stung my knees instantly, and my hands tremble so hard I had to clasp them together just to keep them from shaking apart. “Please.” “What are you doing?” The lady asked as she tried to shield him from me. The door opened and the rude lady that I had met outside the elevator walked in and the first thing she did was laugh. “Wow! You came here to beg? I should have known you were a beggar seeing how you are dressed.” I did not have time for her, do I? “Mr Reed, it is time for the meeting, everyone is waiting.” She said to the man who remained quiet and unmoving all this time. I looked up at him with pleading eyes. He suddenly walked past me towards the door. My heart sank as he walked past the lady who was looking down at me triumphantly as he ignored me. “Please, just give me a trial.” The boss suddenly stopped at the door, and turned back. “What is your name?” That was unexpected. “What?” “What is your name?” “Morgan, Morgan Kings.” “Let her come with us to the meeting, Clara.” He said to the lady at the door. Then turned to me, “Let’s see what you’ve got.” Something inside me dropped like all the air had been punched from my lungs because that voice hit a place in me I had tried for years to bury. I lost all my sense of reasoning as his voice hit me, I have heard that voice before, five years ago. A numbness crawled up my spine, freezing me in place as the memory slammed into me. “That voice, it’s you!”
