Today is the day.
It's finally my birthday!
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AQUILLA CALLIOPE!" Everyone at home greeted me with big smiles on their faces.
Turning eighteen is something I have always dreamed of. It's the moment when I could finally shift into a wolf and be in a pack—if possible. I will automatically be the omega in my pack because I was born into a family of omegas. That happened to Everlee. She is the omega of her pack, even if she clearly deserves to be the leader.
Our cousins, relatives, and some friends came to our house because of my coming of age. Even werewolves I don't know came to visit just to see me. They must be expecting that I look like Everlee, who is oh-so-beautiful and lively.
I couldn't fully enjoy my birthday because I was so bothered about the auction that will be held next week. Couldn't they give me more time to prepare just in case I need to learn martial arts? I need to protect myself if ever I end up with an abusive and indecent guy.
I was sitting on the couch, thinking profusely about the auction. But my daydreaming halted as soon as Candice, my spoiled cousin, walked towards me with her five-inch hot pink heels, hot pink mini skirt, and black fitted sleeveless shirt. She had this annoying expression on her face that I couldn't explain. But what vexed me more was her lipgloss, which is probably a hundred layers.
"Hi, birthday girl!" she greeted me with a baby-ish tone, which greatly annoyed me. She sat beside me on the couch and moved her butt so aggressively that I could feel it.
I rolled my eyes at her and immediately stood up; however, she held my wrist and pulled me back down on the couch.
"Are you joining the auction as a lot?" she asked me and rested her chin on the palm of her right hand.
I sighed and leaned on the couch. "Yes," I replied.
"Oh? How bad for you. I already feel that no one will bid for you in the auction. That would be a great embarrassment, wouldn't it?"
My eyes widened as she said those. I didn't think about that! She's right. What if no one's going to choose me? Then I would be standing there like a fool!
"There will be someone," I replied momentarily. I don't want to lose over Candice, even if it's a trivial argument.
"And who do you think it is? Do you know who the auctionseers will be this year already? I bet you don't!" Candice laughed loudly and everyone standing close to our proximity immediately turned their heads in our direction. I felt slightly embarrassed.
"O-of course I know!" I lied. I shouldn't have said that, but I couldn't think of anything to rebut.
"Oh really? So what gave you the courage to join that auction when all the auctioneers this year are Alphas, huh?"
WHAT?!
ALL THE AUCTIONEERS THIS YEAR ARE ALPHAS?!
"You seem surprised. You are such a liar, Aquilla Banana. If I were you, you better not join that auction if you don't want to be humiliated. I'm sure I will be the lady who will captivate the Alpha King's blue eyes."
My heart skipped a beat as the only words echoing in my ear were the last words Candice uttered.
"T-the Alpha K-king? He will join?" I asked, stuttering. My heart is beating fast like a wild horse in a race.
Candice nodded her head and rolled her eyes. "Of course! This is the first time Cyrus Maverick has decided to join an auction. I bet he's finally looking for a luna, and I'm sure that the luna he is looking for will be no other than Candice Bergen."
I wanted to tease her more, but I felt skeptical about her, so I didn't reply anymore. It's doubtful for Cyrus to join the auction just to look for a luna. A slave, maybe?
This is making me even more perturbed. If Candice told the truth and Cyrus was one of the auctioneers, it would be hell for me.
Cyrus Maverick, the most powerful of all werewolves, and the Alpha King, the leader of Devas, is joining the auction.
He is the only guy I have laid my eyes upon ever since I was five years old. I met him at the royal garden because I was lost, and he helped me find my way back home. He had this nonchalant look on his face and didn't give a smile to anyone. But it doesn't matter. I like him despite his apathetic behavior.
The last thing I would wish for is to be embarrassed in front of my one and only savior. He must not see me at that auction! But there is no turning back since my mom has already offered a slot for me.
My birthday ended with a frown, feigning felicity because I didn't feel delighted with what I figured out. I need to ask mom if what Candice was blabbering about was true.
Everyone finally left the house; it was just me, Everlee, mom, and dad again. I finally let out a heavy breath and yawned.
"Hey, Aquilla! Are you feeling unwell? You look so pale," Candice uttered to me.
Is that so? Am I being so obvious with my emotions?
Mom looked at me as well and smiled. "Why don't you try to shift? The full moon has finally appeared. I'm sure you can already shift into your wolf form."
That's right, I can't believe I forgot about it! I can now shift into a wolf!
I stood up and stretched my arms like I was warming up. Honestly, I'm kind of nervous because I feel my wolf will be as ugly as I am. If that happens, I will bury myself in the ground forever!
"Mom, dad, Everlee, how do you shift into a wolf anyway? Do I just stand and scream, and I already shift?" I questioned. Nobody has ever taught me how to shift into one.
"You will feel your wolf inside you if you focus, Aquilla. And it will scream from within as soon as you feel like shifting. The process of shifting into one is up on you," dad responded in the kindest manner.
I smiled, a very anxious smile.
I stepped outside the house and stood in the garden, looking up at the night sky. The stars were aligned so perfectly, and the moon was round and wonderful. It was beaming light so luminously.
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes as I tried to summon my inner wolf. Momentarily, I felt a spark inside me, and I'm sure that was my wolf.
"Come on. Come out," I mumbled.
The spark grew bigger and bigger as I screamed my heart out loud as my wolf also howled from within. After that, I opened my eyes and saw myself slowly shifting.
"Wow, you look wonderful, Aquilla Calliope." I heard Everlee's voice from behind.
I turned around and saw mom, dad, and Everlee looking at me in awe with their eyes bugged out, and their mouths opened wide.
"A wolf of pure white snow," dad muttered. I heard it very clearly.
I finally managed to shift into a wolf. What is evident to me right now is that I feel very warm, and my eyesight is as clear as the clean rivers. I can see the most minor details of Everlee's skin. It's just now that I realized she also has dirty pores.
"You are so beautiful, Aquilla. We'll have to wait for a few months until you unlock your seventh sense," Everlee stated as I marched toward her. I nodded my head.
The seventh sense is another type of ability bestowed upon werewolves as soon as they come of age. It could be telepathy, psychokinesis, clairvoyance, and anything that involves psychic abilities. Werewolves speak through their minds whenever they communicate with others in their wolf form, because a wolf can't talk through its mouth.
Everlee, mom, and dad have the same seventh sense, psychokinesis. It might be possible for me to have that kind of ability.
Typically, a werewolf is also blessed with a sixth sense, which was what I discovered just a few moments ago. It is basically just an enhancement of the five senses: touch, sight, smell, taste, and hearing. I have enhanced eyesight as my sixth sense.
Everlee has an enhanced sense of smell, mom has the same as Everlee, and dad has an enhanced sense of hearing.
"You know that when you shift back to your human form, you will feel weak for ten minutes and, of course, naked," mom implied. "You always need to be careful and don't shift into your wolf form whenever you don't need to. Even if you are an omega, you need to learn how to fight. Anything could happen nowadays."
I nodded my head again. I desired to get back inside the house and look at myself in the mirror, but I realized I wouldn't fit in our doorway. I could instantly destroy the whole house if I stepped onto our delicate floor.
"Do I look good?" I asked through my mind.
They all nodded at me. I'm glad my wolf form looks beautiful.
...
The day ended as fast as I could even imagine. I didn't even get the chance to meet new friends because I was overthinking the auction and how to avoid it. I asked mom if it was true that the Alphas in the whole of Devas would be the auctioneers, and she nodded, confirming what Candice told me. Of course, I also asked mom if the Alpha King would be one of the auctioneers, and she nodded again.
I am finally an adult, and it's true what others say. The beginning of your life's downfall is when you turn eighteen.
As I was about to enter my room, I furrowed my brows as I peeked into Everlee's room through her door, which was standing ajar. She is crying?
Why on earth is she crying in the middle of the night?
I opened her door widely and crossed my arms at her. I stared at her as she wiped her tears away. It's unusual to see Everlee cry. The last time I saw her cry was probably when she was ten years old and I was eight in elementary school. She always hides her true feelings by smiling.
"You aren't asleep yet, I see? What brings you here?" she immediately uttered at me with a brittle voice. After that, she smiled.
I rolled my eyes at her. "Stop being such a sham, Everlee. I literally saw you crying. Now, tell me, why are you crying? Is something bothering you?"
I walked towards her and stood before her as I leaned on the wall.
"It's not common to see you in this vulnerable state, Everlee. As your caring sister, I would want to know what is bothering my oh-so-beautiful sister Everlee at this time of night," I murmured at her.
She took a deep breath and nodded her head. She still looks so beautiful and charming even when she cries. Why is this world so unfair? She is my sister! Why don't I look as beautiful as her?
I should stop complaining about things beyond my control.
"You don't have to know about it, Aquilla. Good night and happy birthday," she replied and pulled her blankets.
"Hey, wait! You need to tell me, or else I will tell mom that you failed your final exams at the university!"
My sister is studying at a university with all the other werewolves at her age because she said she wanted to have a normal life just like humans, who just end up working their whole lives. She is taking up medicine.
"Shh, don't tell mom about it!"
I smirked at her.
"Our conversation last night was interrupted, eh? Don't you think this is a good time to talk about that guy you love? Who could be the Alpha that Everlee loves and cares for?" I teased her and jumped on her bed.
She chuckled, but it wasn't a thrilled one.
"You really want to know?"
I nodded my head.
She took a deep breath and laid down beside me. "Make sure you won't hate me if I tell you," she mumbled carefully.
I just stared at her, trying to comprehend what on Devas is she blabbering about.
"It's the Alpha King."
