Chapter 17: Lady Thea's Death

1343 Words
“Faster, everyone! Make sure to make no mistakes!” Ma'am Hasha firmly commanded. Every butler and maids are gathered to prepare dinner for the royal family. Even Prince Kyloʼs family is there with him. He has a daughter about five years of age and a beautiful wife. He said that the woman he married wasn't a noble. However, she is a powerful gamma from what I know. I'm still bothered about the first prince. I want to know why it is that he warned me about Kieran. And of course, I want to know what he saw in my future. Will I be rich? Or will I marry a rich noble man? Or will I die rich? It's nonsense. Maybe my future isn't even that important to talk about. I'm just a mere omega who was auctioned by the alpha king, and now works as a maid in his castle. “Serve this on the table.” I immediately took the tray of food and took it outside to the dining hall. Everyone's eyes laid on me as soon as I stepped inside. I must be prim and proper before them. “Hello, Aquilla. Nice to meet you again! Our conversation earlier was interrupted,” Prince Kylo spoke as I placed the food on the table. I just smiled and continued what I was doing. What should I reply to him anyway? “It's an honour to converse with his grace.” I glanced at Cyrus for a moment, but he wasn't looking at me. He's just sipping grape wine while thinking deeply about something. “I wish to talk to you again later, Miss Calliope, if you don't mind.” I nodded my head at Kylo in response. Who am I to object? Besides, I also want to ask him more about Kieran as he knows him better than I do. Still, I desire to live peacefully and safely in this place. ... After a few hours, I waited on the balcony where Prince Kylo told me to wait for him. I stared at the bright moon as the cold air entered my nostrils. I wonder what my family is doing now. I hope they're fine. Suddenly, I squinted my eyes as I saw a bat approaching me. Its eyes were glistering red. I immediately moved away and placed my hands on my face. Why would a bat be here? I thought the royal castle strictly forbids bats? I thought the bat would attack me, but I was wrong. It just flew away as soon as a small folded paper landed on the flat surface of the fence my elbows were resting on. I curiously looked at the paper and took it. A few unfamiliar letters were written on it with bold red ink. They were French. ne reviens pas — VK. I don't even know what this means! I looked closer at the scribbled letters, hoping I would understand them. Then I realized that the ink used wasn't really ink, but blood. I gasped and instantly folded it back to how it was. This paper clearly isn't for me, but why did that bat leave it here? Strange. I heard footsteps approaching from behind, so I placed the folded paper in my pocket and turned to Prince Kylo. He greeted me with his bright smile and a small wave. “Good evening, your grace,” I greeted him back. “Good evening.” He sighed and stood beside me. He looked at the moon and pressed his lips together. “How wonderful the moon is tonight, don't you think?” I nodded my head. “It is filled with wonder.” I took a deep breath as I clenched my fists. I don't know why I feel so uneasy. “What is it that you want to talk about?” I asked. He looked at me and placed his hands inside the pockets of his beige trousers. He examined me for a moment, then he opened his mouth to speak. “Just like Edevane, I couldn't see through your future. You also make me wonder, Miss Calliope.” My eyebrows met in confusion. “Huh?” Prince Kylo stepped closer to me as he tried to assess my countenance. He's making me uncomfortable! “Why can't I look into your future? Are you perhaps the same creature as Edevane —which who until now has been a mystery to everyone?” This time, my jaw tightened as I felt my blood boiling. “I am a werewolf, your grace, and I know you can smell through me. If that isn't enough, I can shift right now if I ought to,” I asserted. He took a deep breath. “I know you are a werewolf, but something about you tells me you aren't— or perhaps, you are a half-blood.” Half-blood? Where is he getting these ideas?! “Who are your parents? Are you related to Edevane? Have you been plotting something with him for a long time?” WHAT?! Kylo's voice started to grow deeper and stern. It's as if his gentle demeanor a while ago was just a facade. I straightened my back and stepped forward. I can't let him accuse me easily just like that! “Excuse me, your grace, but I've been living my whole life with my parents! They're both omegas and pure-blooded werewolves. As for Kieran, we just met recently when I was escorted to the palace. Please don't accuse me of being vile, your grace. I've never done anything wrong since I entered this castle.” ‘You did. You let the Alpha King touch you.’ That isn't counted. I closed my eyes and breathed in exhaustion. This day has been too much for me to handle, and here is someone accusing me horribly of something weird. I thought Kylo would be kinder than Cyrus, but Kieran and I may be wrong. Kylo smiled and moved a few steps away from me. “Pardon me for being harsh,” he said in a calmer tone and placed his hand on his forehead. “I just want my family to be safe. At first, I wasn't really cautious about those whose fate I can't see, but when she died—” he stopped speaking and lowered his head. “Everything must've changed. I wanted to see the intentions of everyone surrounding the people I love and protect.” “W-who is she?” I asked. I know I am not in the right position to ask him about this, but unfortunately, I am now involved with it. “Thea Grashene, my ex-lover.” Kylo sounded as if he still hadn't recovered from the death of his late lover. It must've been hard for him to move on. “Why did she die?” I asked again. A guilt within me suddenly started to rise. Should I be asking him these questions? Kylo looked at me and tried to compose himself before replying. He clenched his jaw and swallowed thickly. Momentarily, he finally smiled and looked back at the luminous moon. “One night, she left the castle. Thea always leaves the castle at night, even if I tell her not to. She's very outgoing and loud, and I loved that about her. That night, I can clearly remember, she was so happy and her eyes were gleaming in excitement, as if she was waiting for that night to come. And then, the next day, we found her corpse in the river, lifeless. Based on what the doctors examined, Thea fell down from the high and steep stone cliff and ended up in the river.” I felt rather sad and remorseful. I shouldn't have asked him about her. Until now, he must have been blaming himself for the death of Lady Thea. “You know who was with her that night she died?” Kylo asked and slowly turned to me. How would I even know? “Kieran Edevane.”
