Chapter 16: The Royal Family

We were just staring blankly at each other after he uttered those words. Then what awaits me? What future is there for me? Did he already know my destiny the moment he looked at me? “Greetings, First Prince, your majesty.” I turned around as I heard Kieran’s voice. He placed his hand on his chest and slightly bowed down as he greeted Prince Kylo. Kylo glanced at Kieran and blinked his eyes. After that, he smirked. How unusual. “The mysterious Kieran Edevane, nice to see you again. I'm surprised you are still working here.” “I’m more surprised to see you here, your majesty,” Kieran immediately replied. I felt the tension between both of them. Whatever the reason is, I know it's not very good to keep them in one room. “Where are you headed to, Eagle?” Kieran asked me while his throwing dagger stare at Prince Kylo. Kylo was also glaring at Kieran with sharp stares. “U-uh, maybe we should call it a day! Nice meeting you, Prince Kylo. Please make yourself comfortable. And you, Kieran, come with me to the maid's kitchen and help me cook for lunch!” I interjected with a jolly voice. I grabbed Kieran’s arms and pulled him towards me. As we were passing through Kylo, I heard him whisper to my ears. “Be careful. Edevane is not someone to be trusted. He is impenetrable. Nobody knows what he truly is.” The sparse hair on my nape stood up as Kylo warned me about Kieran. We just continued walking. ‘That is what I'm telling you, Aquilla. I never felt good about Kieran the first time we met him.’ My inner wolf spoke. Kieran might be mysterious, and I might never know about his true intentions, but I'm sure he is a good one. I don't want to think ill of him, especially since he has already done a lot for me. If he wasn't here beside me, I wonder what I would be of me right now. We reached the maid's kitchen, and fortunately, it was just the two of us there. I can ask him whatever I want to. “Who are you?” I asked. I've been asking him this question every single day. “I told you, it's up to you to find out. And if you find out, then that makes you different,” he replied. It's always like this and it doesn't make sense at all. I sighed in frustration and tilted my head at him. “Really? You really expect me to be capable of that when not even the Alpha King and the First Prince know about who you truly are?” He cutely smiled and nodded his head. “Of course! Nothing is impossible.” “You are unbelievable.” “And so are you.” I rolled my eyes at him. He's always so good at turning the tables around. “How much do you know about the royal family? Tell me more about them.” I sounded more like commanding him rather than requesting. Kieran sat down on a small stool behind him. He placed his chin on his palm and acted like a sulking child. He closed his eyes and shook his head. “What if I don't want to tell you about them?” he teased while pouting. “I’m never going to talk to you again.” Kieran grabbed a shiny red apple from the basket of fruits. The apple in his hand seemed to be so tasty and sweet from the looks of it. “The royal family is like this apple. They may look very sparkly, clean, beautiful, and flawless, but deep in the core is rotten flesh.” Kieran crushed the apple with one hand. My hands flew to my mouth as worms started to crawl outside the apple. It didn't seem rotten? Did he use magic? I'm sure the apple was freshly picked! The worm crawled into Kieran’s hand. After that, the apple and the worms vanished and turned into sparkling specks of dust that landed on the floor. He's using magic. “That’s an encapsulation of the royal family. Is there anything you want to know more about?” What the heck was that? “Do you really expect me to understand your analogies? I am not a literature student, Kieran. Just tell me about the royal family and stop using figurative language.” Kieran examined me for a while, probably figuring out if I was serious about it or not. I remained my arms crossed at him. “Fine. The late king, the father of Cyrus, was one of the best leaders of Devas. However, he had multiple affairs, one of which is Cyrus's mom—who is a mage like me. I don't know much about Cyrus's mother, but I know she was a terrible one. A VERY terrible and malevolent mage. Cyrus grew up with that woman. Her death, it was rumored that she committed suicide, but who knows? Nobody really cared about her. After her death, Cyrus had no choice but to live with his father and the royal family. He was soon revealed as the Second Prince. Then soon, he was then announced to be the next to the throne after the First Prince renounced his position. That's it. What else do you want to know?” “Anything else that you didn't mention.” Kieran languidly exhaled. “They also have two younger siblings, twins. One is a boy and the other is a girl. They are born of the same mom as the First Prince. Those twins, apparently, are out on a vacation. They also live here, and are coming back in a week or two.” I nodded my head. So they still have two more siblings. I suddenly felt bad for Cyrus being the only one born from an affair with the late king. It must be so hard for him to adjust to everyone here the moment his mom died. Did he have a good life as a child? The first time we met was in the royal garden, where I immediately figured out that I liked him. That moment was probably his first day in this palace, but he helped me find my way back despite adjusting to a new environment. I smiled at the thought of that memory. Everything is still vivid in my head. “What are you ridiculously smiling there for? Are you excited about meeting the twins?” “Yeah. I am very excited. How old are they?” “Fifteen.” They're younger than me. Thank goodness! It would be embarrassing if I were the same age as them and they already have their seventh sense while I do not. I wonder when I will finally figure mine out. Kieran exhaled for the nth time. “Do you still want to know more?” “Why is Cyrus distant from Prince Kylo?” “Oh, that I don't know. Ever since they were little, Cyrus has always been distant from everyone in the royal family. Actually, not only to the royal family but to everyone. He is apathetic, but he really cares for Devas. And he is a good leader. I know you agree.” I smiled and nodded my head. This is making me want to know more about Cyrus and his life in the past. “Are you aware of Prince Kylo’s seventh sense?” I asked out of the blue. Until now, it still amazes me that I finally met someone who could see the future. “Yup. That clairvoyant blond guy who gave up his throne for his brother who doesn't even care for him. He is kind. No, he is actually extra kind and humble, but I don't understand him sometimes. He must've turned mad about seeing the future of everyone he meets. That is just too much to handle — especially when he sees misfortunes and deaths. And the worst thing is that he couldn't do anything about it.” Kieran pulled a cigarette from his sleeve and placed it between his lips. He didn't light it up. He was just playing with it. “So, does that mean he saw your future too?” “No. He couldn't do that to me, Eagle. But you, I'm sure he already knows your fate. And I'm certain it isn't as interesting as how he expected it to be.” “What do you mean?” I questioned in a baffled tone. “You should be prepared, Eagle. You know less than you think.”
