Chapter 6

1993 Words
Alpha Samuel I sigh as Kate raises the point that Maddie may be a twin to this Louise woman and in turn, Kate’s stepsister. “Kate, we have been over this. The DNA is indicating you are not a match to one another,” I remind her. “I understand that Samuel, but this is the only thing we have as commonalities,” she reminds me. I agree, it is the only thing that is common aside from our alliances with four other Packs. There are six Packs in our alliance, well a seventh, when you add in Jared Montgomery’s Pack – the Black Shadow Pack and newest addition. Jared is Lucy’s mate; Lucy is Kate’s best friend. “I would suggest we need to reach out to the other Packs to determine if they have seen any rogue activity,” I suggest to Kate. I can hear Kate sigh on the other end of the phone. I know she feels it’s a futile effort, but I am adamant that we take that route to ensure we don’t miss anything. After agreeing who is calling which Packs, we agree to reconnect tomorrow with our findings. As I sit back in my chair, I smile as I scent my mate, Jasmine, coming toward my office. Standing I move around the desk, leaning against it as she walks in. She moves into my arms, kissing me slowly as we say hello. Moving around to take my seat, I pull her into my lap to hold her in my arms. Even now, after this much time together she manages to calm me easily and quickly. “So, I take it your call with Alpha Kate came back to Maddie being her stepsister?” she asks knowingly. “Yes, that woman is a dog with a bone,” I mutter. Laughing at me, Jasmine kisses my cheek, leaning her head on my shoulder. “It is odd Sam, odd that she’s identical to this other woman,” she murmurs. I know she’s right and I know it’s odd, but I want to do what I can to protect my sister. “Have you been over to see Maddie yet this morning?” I ask Jasmine. She’s been watching over Drake as much as being with Maddie. I like the guy. He’s dedicated to Maddie. I just hope they are truly fated mates, otherwise, I will be kicking his ass off my territory in short order. I fear that he wants her to be his mate so badly, his judgement may be clouded. I could be wrong; Goddess I hope I am wrong. My sister deserves a strong man, willing to fight for her. “Yes, I popped in. Drake was already up and sitting beside Maddie. He indicated he had to go back to his Pack later this afternoon, for some business. I said I would stay with her when he left,” Jasmine shares. “I have some time this afternoon, I can pop over as well. I wish she would just wake up already,” I say to Jasmine. “If she did suffer a loss like we believe may have happened, we have to expect it is much like losing a mate,” Jasmine offers. Nodding I agree, it has been noted in history that when a twin dies, the other is not long behind them. Therefore, I was encouraged that Maddie wasn’t the twin to this other woman. It meant she wouldn’t die from the loss. But the longer it took, the more her health dwindled. And added stress to our family who was waiting for her to wake. As we sat together in silence, both considering Maddie’s situation, my phone started to ring. Seeing it was one of the other Pack’s I was waiting for a call from, Jasmine stands up kissing me on the lips before I answer the phone. I smile at her as she walks out of my office. “Alpha Jason, thank you for returning my call,” I start as the door shuts behind my mate. Drake POV I was frustrated. I wanted Maddie to open what I expected were beautiful eyes so we could claim each other. I knew her family was cautious in believing me when I said we were mates. I know we are. Every time I touch her sparks occur between us. I touch her all the time, hoping those sparks ignite her curiosity to come back to us. I know her body is failing. The Pack doctor has been in to check on her regularly. Her heart rate keeps slowing down. The only time I see spikes in her heart rate is when I first touch her but then it settles to a slower rhythm. I have wanted to kiss her soft lips, but I feel like that would be too weird. I know I am her mate, but she’s never met me before. I want our first kiss to be when she is awake and knows I am her mate. Leaning against the bed, I take her hand in mine. I see the spike in her heart rate and wait for it to go down. But it remains high. My heart catches. Does this mean what I hope it means? That she is fighting to come back to me. As I sit there with my breath held, I see the rate start to slow down again. That’s okay, she held on longer this time. Something is helping and I am going to keep pushing her to bring her back. “Come back to me, Maddie; we have so much to live for,” I softly tell her. I have told her about myself, my Pack, and how much I already love her. I tell her she’s beautiful every day. Even in her weakened state she is a beautiful woman, and I am blessed by the Goddess to have her. There are similarities between her and Louise, but so many more subtle differences. She looks softer, less hardened by life than Louise had been. Louise had experienced a tough young life, which caused her to be skeptical that anyone could love her. I tried my best, but I know it wasn’t good enough. We had our challenges early in our relationship; however, we did experience some good times as well. I don’t know how Louise would have reacted to having met Maddie. Well, I know. She would have been jealous of Maddie. Jealous of Maddie’s life. Wondering why she didn’t get to live with Maddie or at least get this home versus the one she had to grow up in. Nothing had been fair to Louise, and I was truly sorry she never fully believed that I had loved her. She had been so confused by Boyd, the betrayer, and her murderer. She thought he was her safe haven, when in fact he had been using her to try and get Alpha Kate’s Pack away from her. Nothing had made sense with Boyd aside from his betrayals of so many people. As I was sitting there considering everything that happened in recent months, I realized one thing. I loved having a mate. And I would do anything to fight for Maddie. She was mine and needed to wake up so we could claim another. I was frustrated that I had to go back to my own Pack today. I had duties I have been neglecting since finding Maddie. I knew I needed to start getting back to a sense of normal but until Maddie work up, I didn’t know what normal was or could be. As I looked at my watch, I realize it’s time I must leave. I stand and step forward to the bed leaning down toward Maddie’s ear. “Maddie, sweetheart, I have to leave for a few hours. I want you to keep fighting your way back to me. There is a great life waiting for you when you come back. I cannot wait to meet you, sweetheart,” I say to her softly. Seeing a blip in her heart rate, I am encouraged. I am getting through to her. Now if her body can fight back, that would be the icing on the cake for me. To come back and have her wake for me, would be incredible. I smile at the thought. Just as I turn to leave, I see Jasmine walking in the door. We have managed to get to know one another a bit better. More so than her brother Samuel who is still skeptical that I am mates with his sister. I share with her how Maddie reacted this morning. She smiles encouragingly but I see a wave of sadness cross her eyes. I don’t want pity; I want people to believe she is coming back to me. As Jasmine promises to stay with Maddie while I am gone, I nod and walk out the door. As I walk out the door, I get a phone call from Kate. Rather than take it here I decide to call her back later, after I arrive at my own Pack. Heading out of the hospital, I take a deep breath of fresh air. I have been entrenched in Maddie’s hospital room for the past week or so and need to let my wolf out to run. I haven’t done so here simply because I am not familiar with the territory. And the warriors aren’t familiar with me so that would cause some issues as well. As I jump on my motorcycle, I head out of the Pack territory onto the open highway toward my own Pack. I smile as I remember Maddie responding to me this afternoon and can only hope she continues to fight her way back to me. Jasmine POV As I watch Drake walk out of Maddie’s room, I shake my head. He has been so dedicated to Maddie I was pulling for him. Hoping that she did end up being his mate, hoping that Maddie would get a happy ever after. And frankly just hoping she would wake up. We had been waiting for about three weeks now, and we needed her back with us. I considered her life before all of this happened. She had been so sheltered and I had never asked why. I wonder how much she has enjoyed her life or if she wishes it had been different. I wonder if she wishes she were different. She had asked to learn to fight over the years, but everyone said no. I never questioned why and now I wish I had. I wish I had supported her more when she had asked to be allowed to learn so she could fight with the rest of us. I took Maddie’s hand saying hello to her and telling her that her mate had just left but he would be back soon. I kept watching the heart monitor to see if anything changed. For just a moment I saw a blip for a couple seconds just after I said mate. My heart caught in my throat. Maybe Drake was right. Maybe he was getting through to her. I mentioned her mate was handsome and again her heart rate jumped. Squeezing her hand, I had hoped she would squeeze back but I felt nothing. Sighing I sat in the chair beside her and opened one of the files I had brought with me. I would work on some planning for an upcoming event we were hosting among the Packs within the alliance. It would take place in a couple weeks. I was hoping by then this rogue situation would have been over and done with. Rogues were so dangerous and unpredictable. I knew we had strong warriors and a strong Pack, but I still feared for them and their safety. That was the role of the Luna, and I loved my Pack.
