Samuel POV
Having spoken with every other Pack that I had committed to calling, I learned that nobody had any interactions with rogues over the past couple weeks. This frustrated me and I could only hope Alpha Kate would hear from some of the Packs on her call list that they had encountered rogues over the past couple weeks. I could not wrap my head around the common denominator for the two Packs being the twins.
Sighing I decided it was time to go visit my Luna. Jasmine had been sitting with Maddie for a few hours now and I had promised to get her for supper. Closing up my office and locking the door behind me, I see my Beta, Luke, walking in from a training session. “How did things go?” I ask.
“Our warriors are ready,” Luke says before continuing, “they will do whatever they can to protect the Pack,” he promises. Nodding I am pleased. Our warriors are among the top in our region, and I am confident they will continue to protect our borders. I just hoped whatever came our way was as easily contained as it had been to date.
“Thank you, Luke,” I reply. Luke is one of my best friends from my childhood. As is often the case, his father was Beta to my father. Luke took to the role of Beta as I did of Alpha. It has been natural for both of us. We trust one another and we would die protecting our Pack. “I am heading over to get Jasmine for supper. We’ll meet you in the dining hall?” I ask. “Oh Alpha, I have a hot date with that new red head in accounting,” he smiles as he turns away. “Okay Romeo, remember you have a mate out there waiting,” I tease him. “And when I find her, I am 100% hers,” he says as he walks into his office whistling.
Chuckling I walk out of the Pack house and head toward the Pack hospital. I meet Pack members along the way and stop to chat with them for a couple of minutes. I enjoy being able to engage frequently with my members and I believe them knowing I am an accessible Alpha makes a difference. I know I have a unique way of managing my Pack. I want to be considered one of them. I can make the hard decisions when necessary and I am confident in my ability to protect them; however, I want to hear them and listen when issues arise. Often, I find this helps avoid bigger issues.
As I walk through the Pack hospital doors, staff stop to show their respect for their Alpha entering the building. I nod to them and then move towards Maddie’s room. As I open the door, my beautiful Luna is caught up reading a file in front of her. I move toward her as she realizes I have entered the room. Smiling up at me, I lean down to capture her lips in a kiss.
“Any changes?” I murmur to her as I look at my sister. “Well, there is one change,” Jasmine mentions. Looking at her with my eyebrows raised in question, she puts her file aside and stands leaning into Maddie. She takes her hand, “Maddie, your mate will be back soon; we all can’t wait to see you,” Jasmine says. As she speaks about Maddie’s mate, Maddie’s heart rate increases. Surprised I look at Jasmine in question.
“Drake mentioned that he had been getting some response from her through her heart rate. I admit I was skeptical, but then I tried it. And well, this is the result,” she says in a rushed voice. Shaking my head, I’m hopeful. This is the first reaction we have gotten from her. If Drake is bringing her back to us, I’ll be eternally grateful.
Leaning forward taking Maddie’s other hand “I miss you Maddie, I want you back with us; come back to us Maddie,” I say to my sister. My heart caught as I saw the heart monitor show a slight jump in her heartbeat. Looking at Jasmine I see tears in her eyes as I realize that Maddie recognized my voice.
Smiling at Maddie, I feel a little dampness on my cheek. “That’s it Maddie, keep fighting,” I say to her. “Have my parents been to visit her?” I ask Jasmine. “If they have, I have not seen them,” she says shaking her head in disgust. For some reason my parents were avoiding Maddie. It made no sense. I would be following up with them tomorrow. They were being ridiculous and only hurting Maddie.
Standing up straight, I look at Jasmine, “Let’s go get something to eat. I’ll come back and stay with her after that,” I suggest. Looking at Maddie, I let her know I’ll be back shortly and take Jasmine’s hand heading over to the dining hall.
Drake POV
Every mile I drove away from Maddie was more and more difficult. I felt like I was leaving my entire life behind. I knew it would only be a few hours, but it seemed like my breath was caught. It would only release when I saw her again. I was encouraged by her responses to me so far. I could only hope that it wouldn’t be much longer, and she would be with me.
As I walked into my office, I picked up my phone first calling Kate to check in. “Hi Drake,” Kate answers with a smile. Kate had become like a sister to me. Our history was complicated but at the end of the day, I thought of her as a baby sister. “Hey Kate, what’s going on?” I ask her.
“Did Samuel mention rogue attacks?” she asks me. I sit up straighter, “I haven’t seen Samuel today,” I reply. “These have been going on for the past couple weeks,” she says. “What the f**k? He didn’t think to mention it to me?” I demand. She fills me in on what’s been happening, the routine, the thought that someone is orchestrating the attacks. “Why?” I ask. “Well, there is one common thread through all of this,” she says. “The twins,” I answer.
“Exactly,” she replies. “Except Samuel still isn’t convinced,” she adds. Shaking my head in frustration, I knew Samuel didn’t believe much of anything we had shared with him. “So, what are you doing about it at your end?” I ask Kate. “Well, I have called all the Packs and nobody else is seeing any rogue activity; although they will be on alert now,” she says.
“We have increased our patrols, our warriors have upped their training as well,” Kate shares. “I’m joining in the training. Although I train at Colby’s I haven’t trained with the Golden Moon Pack in a while and I want to be in sync with them,” Kate says spoken like a true leader. She never asks of others, that she won’t do herself. “What can I do to help, Kate?” I ask wanting to get to the point.
“Nothing at the moment, Drake. I’m going to head over to the Red Moon Pack tomorrow to meet with Samuel. I will pop in to see you and Maddie, tomorrow. I want to see her,” Kate says. I know Kate has been impatient waiting for Maddie to wake up; there are so many questions we have, and nobody is sharing anything. Hell, maybe there is nothing to share. I just need her to wake up and confirm that we are mates. Then we can go from there. Slowly. I won’t rush her. I can tell she’s been very protected, but I won’t leave her behind. That much I can guarantee.
Saying good-bye to Kate, I turn back to my work. Looking up I see my Alpha come in. He sits and we talk about what’s been going on with Maddie. He also shares what’s been going on with the Pack and mentions the rogue attacks at the Golden Moon Pack and the Red Moon Pack. Things are progressing well with our Pack – the Blue Moon Pack. We have managed to stay under the radar often.
I have always had connections with rogues, one rogue Pack in particular – a Pack who was comprised of rejected or banished wolves who came together to keep their sanity and humanity. I would reach out to them to see if they heard any buzzing about a rogue group trying to break through the borders of the Golden Moon Pack or the Red Moon Pack.
I was almost finished catching up on my work. I wanted to get a run in before heading back to my mate. Smiling, I thought about Maddie. I couldn’t wait for her to wake up.
Unknown POV
They were all scrambling. Wondering who was attacking and why. I could tell them but then what would be the fun in that? I wanted them to suffer as I have suffered. How could I explain that? How would they understand or even care?
The perfect Kate and the perfect Lucy, or rather Maddie. Everybody loves Alpha Kate. That b***h has to pay. Her perfect life sickens me. Maddie is a surprise and an anomaly. Not much is known about her. It will be fun to play with them both. They deserve what is coming to them. Now to just put my plans in motion. I wonder when Maddie will wake up. I can’t do anything until that happens.
Oh, what fun I will have. They all owe me. Let the rogue attacks continue.
