CHAPTER ONE: Well Look Who It Is
“Yeah well his f*****g loss” my best friend Ariana says with a surprisingly pleased look on her face. We are currently debriefing the downward spiral that is- sorry *was* my 3 year relationship with Liam who I met during my sophomore year of college. Things were going great until summer ended and our senior year was only a couple of weeks away. I mean you wouldn’t believe the amount of vacations we managed to cram into the two and a half months we were granted for summer break. Every weekend was either spent fine dining at a beachside restaurant or passionate s*x in a hot tub under the stars.
Unfortunately, the euphoric high of freedom and fun seemed to be the cause of death to my relationship. “You’re a bad influence on me Serena. We are about to enter our last year of college and you have no idea what you’re planning to do. You’ve dragged me into this mess with my parents and I can’t see this relationship going any further.”. I’m willing to admit that he was half right. I don’t really know what I’m planning on doing. I’m a business major. Can it get anymore broad? Every time I try to imagine what I would do with my degree, I get overwhelmed and end up distracting myself with one of my useless hobbies. The part that Liam was not right about, is his own messy relationship with his parents. I mean really, I could go on and on about how Mrs. and Mr. perfect have really screwed up their son. He couldn’t fathom the concept of having fun AND being responsible. Balance is good. I’m almost positive he broke up with me in a twisted attempt to please his parents. Like I’m sorry you were having so much fun? Ugh grow up.
So now here I am, single, in my hometown for winter break. While I do find comfort in the familiar enjoyment of gossiping with my childhood best friend, I would really rather not waste anymore time dwelling on the emotional roller coaster that has been the past few months. I decide to change the subject. “So whatever happened to Drake Morrison?” I say with a devious grin. Ari knew just where I was going with that. “Oh my GOD. NO.” She’s shaking her head laughing.
The best thing about Ari going to our hometown’s local college is that she knows what’s happening in everyone’s lives. We have a running joke where anytime someone new is pregnant, she calls me and I have to guess who it is. The worst part about her being here is of course the long distance. We only see eachother a few times a year now. Although it’s been hard, we still keep in touch on a daily basis between the phone calls, FaceTimes, and snap chatting random rashes that pop up while attempting to diagnose eachother. She’s been my best friend since we were nine years old when her younger brother threw a rock in my direction and she slapped him square in the face in my defense. She ran up to me with this sincere confidence that she was going to be my friend.
“THAT GUY??” Javi cackles as he does a 21 jump street reenactment roll-over move onto the couch next to Ari. “Well look who it is, hello to you too” I say to him rolling my eyes. It’s been about 2 years since I’ve seen Javi, and let me tell you, he looks different. Different in the fact that he’s not the awkward, lanky little brat that I’ve always known. Ari told me he enlisted into the military right out of high school, but she didn’t tell me he had turned into a TANK. He’s home for the holidays also and I guess we have alot to catch up on.
