There was a minute, as I started down the freeway toward Virginia on the third, when I told myself, You should try not to think about Angie all the way there. Then I realized that was stupid, because he was part of this. He didn’t ask me to move, it was my idea, but I only had the idea because of him. Angie in my life was the goal, the whole reason I’d taken Henry’s advice and contacted this office.
Also on my mind was Angie’s conversation with Lou, which I’d heard both sides of because Lou had one of those made-for-the-phone voices: very clear without being shouty. They must have been friends for quite a while; it was clear Angie trusted Lou a lot.
