Eva’s POV
I step into the hallway quickly shutting the door to my father’s office. I glance around and let out a sigh of relief once I realize I’m alone. Moving quickly, I make my way to the large double glass doors bulldozing through them. I inhale the strong scent emerging from the gardenias that are beautifully landscaped around the building. I feel the crisp air hit my warm skin. I hear birds happily chirping and water flowing in the stream behind the pack house. Just as I start to calm down, I can feel someone trying to mind link with me.
“You look beautiful today” Messer says in my head.
I look around scanning the area quickly trying to spot him. I don’t see him anywhere. I take a big deep breath and quickly pick up his scent. As I follow his delicious earthy sandalwood fragrance, I’m brought around the pack house to the botanical garden that sits on the stream’s bank.
He is sitting on a bench near the water. Every short black hair perfectly in place. His soft young features still manage to look strong and bold while relaxed. His large mesmerizing amber eyes meet mines as he stands to greet me. I lean into his strong hard body placing my head against his chest wrapping my arms around him. I melting in his warm welcoming embrace.
“Are you ok?” He asked.
“Yeah. Just a long morning.” I respond.
Beings he is Beta Miles’s son, I know he always knows more than he ever leads on. We have been best friends all our lives. He was always my comfort and someone I could trust with the world. The only person I could be fragile with. Everyone thought once we hit eighteen we would be mated by the Moon Goddess but it didn’t happen that way. Now, we are both unmated at twenty-five. I don’t stress about it much and I know he doesn’t either. We made a pack that if we are not mated by thirty we will mark each other becoming life long mates. Even though I long to know what a mate’s bond given by the Moon Goddess truly feels like, I am happy and content with our relationship. I just hate that we chose to keep it a secret till we are thirty. Five year seems like forever away.
“I wish I could hold you like this all day, but we both know the elite are waiting to start their training for the day.” He says squeezing me a little tighter.
I pry my arms from around him not wanting to let go and glance at my watch. It’s 8:37 and training is suppose to start at 8:30.
We hurried inside and to the elevator. Messer presses button number seven to take us to the training floor. On our way up he places a gentle kiss on my lips.
“Everything will be ok Eva. I promise.” He says as the doors open.
Everyone is doing warm up stretches as we walk out the elevator.
“I was just about to mind link when y’all came out the elevator. We were getting worried. Y’all are never late for training.” Mindy says as she is looking at Messer.
“Sorry. Eva got caught up with Luna duties and lost track of time. I had trouble getting out of bed.” He says smoothly.
“Mom said you never came home last night Mess.” Mindy states. But, it sounds more like a question.
“Alright everyone. I want eight laps. Let’s go.” Messer shouts completely ignoring his sister.
As training goes on, I sit back and watch. Usually, I lead but today I’m looking to see who could potentially be good Alpha material. Zack could be an option. He is a strong leader but is not one to talk things over. Not good for civil matter but I’m still putting him on the list. Luca is a strong contender. He is very organized. He moves and does thing with a purpose not only in war but all around. He goes on the list. Messer? Maybe.
I feel a sudden overwhelming since of guilt as I question Messer’s ability as an Alpha. He is our second best warrior of our huge pack. Me being first. He is next in line to be Beta. Which technically would mean, if no one else, he would be our next Alpha. He has a great sense of responsibility when given an order. Unfortunately, he is a people pleasing pushover when it comes to civil matters.
Screw it. Messer is on the list.
Messer’s POV
I can see the pressure and stress weighing Eva down. Her tiny little dainty body looks tense as I can tell she is deep in thought. I know she is not as fragile as she looks but seeing her in this state makes me nauseous.
My father told me yesterday Alpha Kane only has a month left. I can only assume Eva was told this morning to start making list of prospects. She has no idea he has been knowing of our relationship since it all started. I had to tell someone. I knew Zack would not be the best choice. He is my best guy friend but gossips like a woman. Not a chance I’m willing to take.
As class comes to an end, the elite pack up their belongings and chat their way to the elevator.
“See you guys tomorrow! Everyone did great!” Eva says. I don’t know how she would know considering she was zoned out the whole time.
“Hey. Do you want to head down to your place. We can relax, take the rest of the day off, and maybe watch a movie.” I offer with a wink.
“That would be awesome but maybe another time.” She says. I see a quick flash of purple twinkle in her eyes. It makes my heart sink into the pit of my stomach.
My mind is racing. Does she know my father is trying to get me to use her to become Alpha? If she knows this, does she think my feelings for her are not true? Is the pressure of keeping our relationship a secret too much for her? Am I too much for her? I feel trapped in my own head. The rage is building. I feel a quick flash of heat blast through my body as she walks away. Before I am able to control myself, I shift.
Eva’s POV
He is being so nice to me. Trying to comfort me in ways he knows is my favorite but I have thing to do. The council is waiting for me and so is my father. I feel so guilty for having conflicting emotions about Messer as a potential Alpha. It enrages me. I feel my wolf wanting to come out and I push her back while responding to Messer’s kind offer. Then without warning his clothes rips to shreds and he shifts as I am making my way to the elevator. He lets out a deep growl that floods me with fear. Without a thought, my wolf takes over and I shift.
His deep brown fur is now standing straight up. The second his eyes meet mine, he puts his head down cowering in terror. His giant wolf looks like a scared little pup compared to me. Messer regained his composure and bows to me. I didn’t expect for our wolves to meet this way and why is he bowing? I give Messer a nod and mind link.
“It’s ok Mess”
He turns away from me and walks to the corner shifting back to his human. Just then, I shift back never moving from where I’m standing. I stare at Messer waiting for him to say something. I’ll take anything at this point. Instead, he is completely naked, shaking, and looks like he has just seen a ghost.
I walk over and grab two towels from the rack beside him. He has still yet to move. I wrap a towel around me and hand him the other. He regained his mobility and quickly wraps the towel around himself.
“Eva we need to go now!” He says with urgency. Before I can respond, I’m rushed into the elevator and off to my suit.
The bright grey walls and white furniture in my large living area feel less inviting than usual somehow as I am shoved inside.
“Are you shitting me Eva?! How long have you known?!” His voice gradually getting louder.
“Known what?!” I am completely confused and slightly annoyed.
“This is why you only shift with and trained with the highest ranking most secretive pack members. Excluding my father. It all makes since now.” He blurts out like he has come to some crazy realization.
“Would you STOP. I have no idea what you are even talking about.” I growl.
Messer takes a step back. He suddenly looks so uncomfortable in my home. Our home. The home has has spent 6 nights a week in for the last year.
