OH god
"Mom, are we there yet, I have to pee!" screams my 5 year old son Isaiah from the back seat for what feels like the 100th time since we pulled out of driveway 18 hours ago. I cant believe i actually packed up my ford f150 and fled.
"Yes sweet heart we are about 25 minutes away from our new house. There should be a gas station coming up soon hopefully we can stop there for you to go to the bathroom." I mumble so ready to get to the house that's been in my mother's family since it was built. As we pull into the remote gas station with flickering lights i hear Isaiah say " this looks scary momma." I for once actually have to agree. As i step out of the air conditioned car im slapped in the face with the dry texas heat. How is it soo hot when its 10 pm.
I turn to help Isaiah out of the car as i hear the sound of motorcycles pull up. And of course my son has to point out the matte black harley . "look momma its so cool." he said, " yes baby it is " i answer without looking up. "come on honey i just want to go to bed lets get you to the bathroom." I said as we walked into the store. If i wasn't so tired i probably would have noticed how everyone was watching us as we walked into the small store.
When isaiah was done using the restroom i decided may as well put some gas in my near empty tank so i wouldn't have to later. .I helped him into the car before pulling to a pump still completely oblivious to the stares im receiving. i forgot how close knit this community is to outsiders, its been damn near 12 years since i came to my mothers home town.
Realizing the pay at pump wasn't an option i grabbed my wallet and went back into the store. "hey honey you need gas?" asks the elder red head attendant " Yes ma'm 30$ on my pump please and hell let me get a pack of new port 100's " as i fished out some cash. "you know i don't recognize you. Are you new to town?" she asks as she grabs the first pack of cigarettes i've purchased in years. "not exactly my family is based here, i needed new scenery after my husband passed and decided id try my luck here."i said not entirely sure why i even mentioned my late husband.
"Oh dear well my name is Rosie. Such a shame to lose your husband so young. You staying nearby?" Rosie asks. "yes ma'am i'm moving into my family home about 20 minutes down the road so im sure ill be seeing you often" i reply looking out the window. She hands my cigarettes and sent me on my way. I hook the pump up and peak in the window to see my little man asleep with his favorite blankie and his bear. I pack my cigarettes as i walk around the car as i pull one out i realize i don't have a lighter. "ugh f**k " i say a little louder than i mean to. as i throw the cigs into my seat. i don't want to have to go back into the store Rosie seems nice but a little too nosey for me. I came here to hide not to make friends.
As i turn to check my surroundings i've noticed the bikers are still sitting on their bikes. Only one biker isn't on his bike he's inside talking to Rosie. As i survey the lot i notice pRosie and the most handsome man i've ever seen looking at me from the window. suddenly very nervous i turn to the pump just in time to hear it click signaling its done. i hurriedly return the pump to its spot and get in my car. Pulling out a little faster than i'd planned but i had to get out of there id already drawn to much attention to myself and i hadn't even been in town for 15 minutes.
the 20 minute ride to the house took all of 10 considering i was doing 20 over. As i pulled into the gravel driveway I looked at the house is spent plenty of summer vacations with my grandmother. After she passed she left the property to my mother who wanted nothing to do with it. Thank god my mother is letting us stay here or i have no idea where we would be.
I grabbed isaiah and our bags with essentials. I had to search to find the house key thankfully i found it quickly. its hard holding a 50 pound kids two bags and maneuvering a key but i managed. i immediately set him on the couch and laid with him drifting off to sleep as i hear motorcycles drive by.
