AN UNSETTLING FEELING
Betty's POV:
It was getting close to winter from the way the air left a tingle over my skin as I took a quick breath of the cold air. I was seated outside the small hut-like house, wrapped in a small piece of clothing in an attempt to fight against the growing cold in the air.
“Are you even listening to me?”, Emelia asked, particularly annoyed that I was gone day-dreaming again, gazing at me like I had something on my face. I offered a sheepy smile.
“Yeah,I am.. I was just thinking..,” I told her.
“Thinking about what?”,she asked curiously.
I heaved a slight sigh, before speaking.
“ I'm just worried..winter seems fast approaching and the crops aren't ready for harvest and Maria said..what if we aren't able to harvest the crops before winter.. what if we can't..” she placed one of her fingers on my lips in a shushing manner. I knew I was worrying too much..I was naturally a worry-watt but I had to.. what if we weren't able to give our harvest to the Alpha before winter ..the Alpha was merciless especially to omegas..and if we were really able to gather the crops to give the Alpha from our emergency stock..we would starve to death during winter.
“Enough with the what ifs.. nothing bad is going to happen, you hear me. Everything is going to be okay..so don't worry too much, okay?” She seemed like she was trying to reassure me as well as herself..now I was looking into those brown eyes I realized she was just as afraid as me or even more.. After all though I had never come or seen the Alpha, she had. As she had told me.
Her small village had been burnt down to the ground, when she was just a little girl and all she could remember was carrying her brother who was still just a baby at that time and running as fast as she could after her mother had died and her father had run into rage by the dead of his mate and died as well right in front of her, while trying to kill her mother's killer..all she could hear was her father's scream for her to keep running. She kept running even as her close pack members were slayed or taken prisoner.. before finally being found at the brink of death by Maria in the woods.
That was the result of the village after most of the villagers had attempted repelling against the Alpha, after he had made the Rules against Omegas.. the Alpha had gotten news of the rumors that a village wanted to revolt and at the end.. There was only blood shed.
I shook my head before offering a smile.
“Maybe you're right, I'm just worrying too much..over nothing”, I assured her I was okay now not wanting to make her any bit worried, though I still couldn't shake the feeling that something bad was gonna to happen.. though I hated this feeling I couldn't shake it off.
She smiled cockily. “I'm always right, sometimes I think it's just one of my blessings from the moon goddess”,she said with a chuckle before winking at me.
“Just keep telling yourself that” I laughed out loud. I knew she was probably just trying to ease my tension by making me laugh but it was working anywhere.. pretty well in fact.
“You know what..haters are going to hate”,she muttered before tugging her hair behind the back of her ear and getting up.
“I have to go now..I need to make sure James isn't up to any mischief again. I'm telling you that brother of mine, one of these days he'll be the death of me. I'll see you later,Betty”, and with that she was off. I couldn't help but giggle a little just thinking about the two siblings as I watched her retreating figure disappear into the background . I got up..but not before offering a silent prayer for James.
FEW HOURS LATER
It was darker now and the sun had begun setting, letting hues of orange escape through the dark clouds in the horizon.
I looked up, raising out my left hand as I saw a fleck of snow gently dancing around from the sky. It fell onto my palm and watched as it slowly melted into water.. I thought everything seemed so perfect.
Back then, I was always so afraid of winter..of the snow. We barely had enough to eat to talk of,so whenever the first snow fell..it was a sign for the coming starvation and freezing to come but now for the first in my life,I couldn't help but think that the snow,it was beautiful.
I just had to wait for Jasper to get home.. Anytime now I thought..but out of nowhere, suddenly almost like a storm all I could hear was yelling.. and loud male voices..ordering everyone out.. the air was only filled with loud cries and pleads. I ran out but not without grabbing a sharp silver blade,my mind in overdrive..they were strange men dressed in black.. from their scent and build..it was obvious they weren't omegas.
Jasper.. where's Jasper..I need to find Jasper.. that's all I could think about.. I ran on my bare feet trying to find him as the other omegas were being thrown around and getting caught. One of the strange men caught sight of me,though I tried hiding and moving through the bushes.
I needed to find Jasper now..oh goddess.. the male wolf walked towards me..every cell in my body warned me. Knowing I had nowhere to run,I got on my feet, ready to defend myself..I wouldn't let them take me..why now.. how could everything turn upside down so fast.. when everything was so perfect..so peaceful.
“I never expected in this isolated land that there would be so many fine looking sluts..if I knew that..I would have made a trip here a long time ago..this must be the reason the Alpha suddenly came here”,the burly man cackled..his eyes.. reflecting his disgusting thoughts. I shivered in disgust.
“We need to kill him to escape..we need to find Jasper”, Eva muttered coldly, no hesitation could be found in her voice.
The male wolf walked closer but I took a step backwards while glaring and growling at him warningly. He chuckled mockingly.
“ You really think you can take me on,a pathetic omega”
I hid the silver blade behind me, waiting for the moment I could strike, not shifting my eyes off of him for a second.
Nothing would stop me from finding Jasper.
