The Ceremony
The full moon shone brightly over Blackpine territory, fat and silver, as if the Moon Goddess herself had come to watch. Elara stood in the small room behind the packhouse kitchen, twirling slowly in front of a cracked mirror. The air smelled of woodsmoke and lavender soap, and from the kitchen below came the muffled clatter of pots, the pack preparing a feast she would never have been invited to any other night. The white dress she wore was one she had sewn herself over three winters, stitching in the evenings after the dishes were done, the floors were scrubbed, and after every other wolf had gone to bed. It wasn't fine silk, and the hem was uneven on the left, but every crooked stitch held a night of hope. It was hers, and tonight she would wear it to meet her mate. The thought made her giggle, a small, nervous sound she hadn't heard from herself in years. "You look like a Luna," Nell, her best friend, whispered excitedly, tucking a stray curl behind Elara's ear. Nell's hands were shaking. "Like a real one." "Omegas don't become Lunas, Nell," Elara said softly. "The Moon Goddess doesn't care about rank. She cares about fate." Nell grinned. "And she picked you." That was the thing nobody could explain. Three nights ago, the old pack healer had shown the whole pack the Goddess's sign in the sacred pool. "Alpha Dante's mate will be found at the next full moon," she had said, with profound certainty. And then Elara had felt it. A pull in her chest like a hook behind her ribs, dragging her toward the Alpha's hall every time he walked by. It had started that very night, a faint tug that grew warmer each day until she caught herself drifting toward his door without meaning to. She never told anyone. She barely admitted it to herself. At twenty-one, she still hadn't shifted. Wolves usually found their beasts at sixteen or seventeen, and the pack whispered about it behind their hands: Elara the Silent, the wolf-less one, the empty omega. But her wolf was there. She had always known it. A faint warmth somewhere deep, like an ember buried under ash. "He's close," the ember finally spoke. The voice was faint but clear, a woman's voice, soft as smoke. Elara had never heard it before. She froze, nearly dropping her comb. "Our mate. I can smell him." "Nell," Elara breathed, her eyes widening, "she spoke." Nell squealed and hugged her so hard her ribs creaked. Elara laughed into her friend's shoulder, and for one precious moment she let herself believe that every lonely year had been leading here. The drums began outside. Deep, slow, the rhythm of a heartbeat. The gathering stone stood at the center of the hill, a flat slab of grey granite worn smooth by a thousand years of ceremonies. The whole pack had formed a ring around it. Torches flickered at every corner, throwing long shadows across the grass. In the front stood the warriors, broad and scarred. Tobias, the Gamma, guarded the edge of the circle with his arms crossed, eyes sweeping the shadows for threats. Marcus, the Beta, stood at the Alpha's right hand, broad-shouldered and smug. And at the very back, where omegas always stood, her friends clutched each other and smiled at her. Elara's mouth went dry as she walked toward them. Every eye was on her, and she had never been looked at by so many people at once. She kept her chin up and her hands tight around the edges of her skirt so no one would see them trembling. Alpha Dante waited at the center. He was dark-haired, tall, sharp and cold, beautiful in the way a winter morning is. His eyes, golden in the firelight, flickered as Elara walked toward him. Her knees suddenly felt weak, and she told herself it was the bond. Beside him, one step behind, stood Seraphine, the Beta's daughter, all red lips and glossy hair and a smile like a knife laid on silk. Elara stepped onto the stone. The granite was cold under her thin slippers. "Elara of the omegas," Dante said. His voice carried across the hill. He held out his hand. She hesitated for a moment, then took it. A spark shot up her arm like lightning. Pine smoke and cold iron filled her nose, and Lyra, her wolf, purred. For one breathless moment Elara felt everything: his pulse beating inside her own chest, the heat of his skin, the thrum of a thread pulling tight between their souls. Then she felt what he felt. It wasn't joy. It wasn't relief or tenderness. It was cold. Calculating. A man standing in front of a purchase he'd already decided to return. Her smile faltered. No, she thought. I must be reading it wrong. I've never done this before. I must be wrong. "The Moon Goddess," Dante cleared his throat, "has named you my mate." Her heart lifted despite everything, for one stupid, hopeful second. "And I reject you." The words struck like a blade between the ribs. The pain came after, huge and physical. It felt like her ribs were splitting open and someone was tearing a rope out of her soul. Lyra screamed inside her, a sound of pure animal agony. Elara dropped to her knees, gasping, her white dress pooling around her. Her hands flew to her chest, as if she could hold the broken thing together with her fingers. Across from her, Dante staggered too. For a heartbeat his golden eyes flickered and dimmed, and he gripped Marcus's arm to stay upright. Then he straightened, jaw hard, as if he'd refused to feel it. "A Luna must be strong," he said to the silent pack. "A Luna must be worthy of a pack like ours. Seraphine will stand beside me." Seraphine stepped forward and slid her hand into his. She shot Elara a quick, mocking look. "Elara, you are stripped of your place in this pack. You are no one. Leave my territory by dawn." Nobody spoke. Not Tobias. Not the warriors. Not even the ones Elara had fed and mended and swept after for years. She searched the ring of faces for a single pair of eyes that would meet hers, and found only people looking at their boots. Nell was crying openly at the back, but she didn't dare move. Elara looked up from the stone, tears streaming down her face, and for the first time in her life she saw him clearly: a cold boy wearing an Alpha's face. "Why?" she whispered, her voice breaking, hands clutching her chest. Dante's eyes slid away from hers. "Because you were never meant to be anything." Seraphine smiled, holding his hand tighter. Elara pressed her palm flat against the cold granite and tried to breathe. The drums had stopped. The torches hissed in the quiet. Somewhere deep inside her, beneath the pain, Lyra was still crying, and still alive, and Elara clung to that single thread. She did not yet understand that the pain wasn't only hers. Across the stone, Dante's hand had begun to shake.
