Chapter 2: The Airport
The airport during summer vacations is always packed with people, a wide array of travelers gathered in one place. Some people meet family,Some people are waiting for stars, people come and go at the airport. Ethan stood in the arrivals area, clutching an almost absurdly large bouquet of flowers. The bouquet was so enormous it nearly concealed his entire upper body. A thousand and one Oriental Lily Chill Out ,more Gypsophila and, more Monstera deliciosa with some added water for weight, made for a surprisingly heavy arrangement. Considering his petite frame, it was clear he was struggling. At his feet, a sign read "Maxwell" in bold, clear lettering, while in a small corner, the name "Liam" was squeezed in, almost too tiny to notice. Feeling the bouquet start to slip from his arms again, Ethan squatted slightly and propped it back up with his knee, hugging it tightly to his chest. Why hadn’t Liam’s friend arrived yet? Was the flight delayed? Ethan took a deep breath and braced his numb arms to keep holding the flowers. Such a massive bouquet—Liam must really care about this Maxwell person, right? But why wasn’t Liam delivering it himself? Sure, he ran a huge company, but with Drake and the others helping out, he should have plenty of free time. He even had time to stop by my café regularly for coffee, so how could he not have time to meet someone at the airport and deliver flowers? A whole day of work at the café isn’t this exhausting. I’d much rather be up early baking cakes, making coffee when customers come in, or sitting in the shop with a book. Anything would be better than wasting time here. While lost in his thoughts, Ethan didn’t notice the tall figure that had walked right up to him, looking down with a mix of amusement and sympathy. Maxwell had barely stepped out of the airport before spotting the strange sight of a person almost entirely hidden behind an enormous bouquet. He had initially planned to ignore it and head straight home. After all, this ridiculous display had to be one of Liam’s pranks—his childish way of teasing had gone a little too far this time. But as Maxwell walked out of the terminal, a flicker of unease crossed his mind. The flight had been delayed for nearly two hours... had that person been holding the flowers for that long? He stopped in his tracks, turned around, and walked towards the “flower bush.” As he got closer, it was clear the person was about to collapse under the weight. Sure, Liam was playing a prank on him, but it wasn’t fair to drag this kid into it. “Are you here to pick me up?” Maxwell asked. The flowers swayed but received no reply. “Hello...” Still no response. Maxwell wondered if the poor person had been overwhelmed by the weight of the flowers or had passed out from the floral scent. Deciding to take action, Maxwell simply grabbed the enormous bouquet, allowing the person hidden behind it to finally see him. Relieved of the weight in his arms, Ethan let out a long sigh of relief. Was that Maxwell? From his vantage point, all Ethan could see was a lot of flowers and half of a broad, muscular chest. He quickly lifted his gaze upward. Was it really him? Ethan blinked rapidly, his large, doll-like eyes wide with surprise, the deep blue of his pupils showing how startled he was. What‘s the matter?Do I look like a ghost? Or something equally strange? His handsome eyebrows arched slightly in curiosity. “I’m Maxwell. Liam sent you, right?” Though Maxwell was slightly annoyed at the startled look on Ethan’s face, he couldn’t stay mad when he realized just how cute the wide-eyed expression made him look. Ethan finally stopped blinking and realized his rudeness. He quickly apologized. “Sorry... are you Mr. Maxwell?” He quickly pulled out a pen and paper from his pocket and started writing. Watching the peculiar movement, Maxwell’s expression softened as realization—and a tinge of regret—flashed across his mind. He nodded in response. “Can you hear me? Or do you read lips?” he asked. “I can’t hear you, but I can read lips... as long as you don’t speak too fast,” Ethan wrote quickly on the paper. “Liam sent you?” Ethan nodded. “He asked me to take you to your new place. The one you were living in was hit during a recent shootout, and the building is still being repaired.” “A shootout? In that high-end neighborhood?” “Yeah, it was because of him. Someone hired an assassin to take him out, and things escalated.” Having lived in London for a while, Ethan wasn’t too shocked by the incident. When Liam and Drake were involved, it wasn’t that surprising. It wasn’t Maxwell’s first time hearing this kind of news either, so he wasn’t surprised. “Let’s get going then. Liam should’ve sent a car, right?” Ethan nodded again. “It’s a bit of a walk from here. Let me carry the flowers.” His small face lit up with excitement. So Liam had done this on purpose. He knew all along who I had fallen for. That’s why he “forgot” he had a whole staff available and made me come to pick Maxwell up. Maxwell gave Ethan a curious look. “You? Carry them? No way, just lead the way,” he said, noting Ethan’s short stature. Realizing what he meant, Ethan blushed and smiled shyly, knowing all too well how short he was. “My name is Ethan Martin, but you can call me Ethan.” Maxwell glanced at the elegant handwriting on the paper. "Ethan! Where are you from?" Ethan shook his head, writing, "I’m an orphan. I took on the surname of the orphanage director, and he gave me my first name. As for my nationality... I’m not really sure." "I see... So, you can’t speak?" Maxwell asked. "I can’t speak because I’m deaf," Ethan wrote. "Liam took me for a checkup, and the doctor said I could try surgery." "Why not give it a shot?" "The chances of success are 50-50. So, I’d rather not." Ethan’s expression grew somber. "Besides, if I don’t go through with it, I can still hold on to a bit of hope. But if it fails… that hope would disappear, and that scares me." Seeing his saddened face, Maxwell couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy. "How old are you?" "I’m twenty-two." "Twenty-two?!" Maxwell looked at him in surprise. He had assumed Ethan was much younger. Ethan smiled silently, knowing it was a common reaction. His baby face and small frame—standing at 168 cm, which was considered short in the UK—often made people doubt his age. He was also slender, making it even harder for anyone to believe he was already a grown man. "In six months, I’ll be twenty-three," Ethan wrote, pointing to a sleek, silver convertible parked ahead. "That’s the car Drake sent for you."He pulled out the car keys from his coat and handed them to Maxwell, carefully protecting them as though they were a precious item.
