Chapter 1: The awakening
Chapter 1: The Awakening The nightmare always began the same way. A silver moon hung low in the sky, casting an eerie glow over the jagged silhouettes of a dense forest. The air was heavy with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves. Ember Miller's feet pounded against the damp soil as she ran, barefoot and desperate, with the howl of something monstrous trailing behind her. The sound sent shivers down her spine, and her heart racing with a fear that seemed all too real. She never saw the beast, only felt its presence—dark, suffocating, and unrelenting. And just as its shadow loomed over her, she would wake up gasping for air. Tonight, however, Ember wasn't dreaming. She stood by her bedroom window, the cool night breeze rustling her auburn hair, which fell in loose waves over her shoulders. Her hazel eyes stared out at the forest, the trees swaying gently in the wind like nature's own lullaby. Freckles dotted her pale skin, and though she was petite, there was a quiet strength in her stance. At nineteen, Ember often felt like an outsider in her sleepy town—a girl who didn't quite fit in, not even with herself. Lately, her body had felt foreign, her senses heightened in inexplicable ways. She could hear the faint rustle of leaves from miles away, smell the rain before it fell, and feel a heat within her that she couldn't explain. It was as though her very bones were shifting, preparing for something she didn't understand. The sensation was both exhilarating and terrifying. As she stared out at the moonlit forest, a movement caught her eye. Her breath hitched. A figure emerged from the shadows, his presence dominating the night, the man exuded power and menace. He was tall, his posture commanding, with shoulders that seemed to bear the weight of a thousand sins. His long black trench coat billowed slightly as he stood at the edge of the treeline, like a predator assessing its prey. His hair, as dark as the night itself, framed a face carved in sharp, unforgiving lines. But it was his eyes—stormy gray and cold—that held Ember captive. She felt like he could see right through her, into the depths of her soul. His gaze was unnerving, yet mesmerizing, like a snake hypnotizing its prey. Ember's heart racing, she felt a shiver run down her spine. The man's eyes narrowed slightly, his gaze intensifying. Ember felt like she was drowning in their depths, unable to look away. Then, without warning, he smiled—a slow, predatory curve of his lips that promised danger. The gesture sent a jolt of fear through Ember, but also a thrill of excitement. She felt drawn to him, like a moth to a flame. "Who are you?" Ember finally found her voice and asked. He smiled, and his eyes crinkled at the corners. "I'm someone who's been looking for you," he said, his voice low and smooth. What did he mean? How had he been looking for me? she thought. But before Ember could ask any questions, the man vanished as quickly as he came, disappearing into the forest leaving Ember stunned and confused. Deep down, she knew. Whatever was stirring inside her, that man had something to do with it. And this was only the beginning. As she stood there, the darkness seemed to press in around her, making her feel small and vulnerable. But Ember Miller was not one to back down from a challenge. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for what was to come. Little did she know, her life was about to change forever.
