CHAPTER 74

AMERIE/JESSICA ALPHA HUNT AND HIS LUNA When the car stops, my heart pounds so fiercely I’m sure it might burst out of my chest. A long pathway lined with red carpet stretches out before us, leading to two massive open doors. On either side of the carpet, a crowd of people with cameras murmur excitedly amongst themselves. The moment Nathan steps out, the air is filled with loud cries as the crowd calls his name. Camera flashes dance across his face, but he remains unfazed, his expression calm and composed. He turns back towards me, extending his hand with a reassuring smile. I grasp it tightly, feeling a little steadier as he helps me out of the car. As soon as I step out, the crowd collectively gasps, and for a moment, it feels as if someone pressed a pause button, freezing everything around me. Then, as if that same button is released, the world bursts into a frenzy again, cameras flashing relentlessly as they shout questions at Nathan, demanding to know my name and who I am to him. I tighten my grip on his hand, straightening my shoulders and smiling just like Cara and his mother had taught me. I even raise my hand to wave at them, though my insides are churning. Nathan gives me an approving nod and guides me toward the open doors, ignoring the crowd’s incessant calls. Behind us, his men follow closely. “You did great,” he murmurs. “Thank you,” I reply, my voice a mix of excitement and anxiety. Inside the entrance, two men in black suits bow respectfully. “Alpha Hunt,” they greet him. “Alpha Hunt and Lady Jessica,” Nathan corrects, his tone authoritative. One of the men nods and gestures for us to follow him down a grand staircase that leads into a stunningly decorated ballroom. Crystal chandeliers hang from the ceiling, casting a warm, golden glow over the entire room. People fill every corner of the hall—some gathered in clusters, holding wine glasses, others seated and conversing, while a few couples sway to the soft music playing in the background. Everyone is dressed as elegantly as we are. A bell rings, and the room falls silent. All eyes turn to the top of the stairs where we stand. “Alpha Nathan Hunt and Lady Jessica,” a voice announces. As we descend the stairs, I catch a few surprised looks from some of the women below. Their expressions become clearer as we approach—disappointment, envy, and jealousy etched on their faces. The men, on the other hand, regard me with admiration, some even with lust, making me cringe inwardly. I focus my gaze above their heads, trying to block out their stares. Nathan leans in, his voice a soothing whisper. “You’re doing great. Just be yourself.” People nod at us as we pass, acknowledging Nathan with respect. Among them, I spot Sasha with four other women. Her lips are twisted in a sneer, and she grips her wine glass as if it’s the only thing keeping her grounded. “Ignore her,” Nathan says softly as we move past them. “Alpha Nathan,” a familiar, friendly voice greets us. It’s Elder De Santos, his smile warm and welcoming. “Elder De Santos,” Nathan returns the greeting with a nod. “Jessica,” the elder says, turning to me with a genuine smile. “You look absolutely stunning. It seems we saved the best for last.” “Thank you, Sir,” I reply, smiling shyly. The elder introduces us to his mate and sons, and we exchange pleasantries with others who join our group. Nathan introduces me to everyone, pausing briefly as one of his men steps away and returns with a glass of orange juice. “Drink up, flower,” Nathan says, handing me the glass. “Thanks.” “Is she your Luna?” a middle-aged Luna asks, her smile kind. “She’s beautiful.” “Thank you for the compliment, Sarah,” Nathan responds. “Unfortunately, I can’t call her that officially yet. But I can’t wait to,” his eyes gleam with a mix of love and excitement. The woman gasps playfully. “Never thought I’d see you this smitten, Nate.” “I should have listened to you and Derek sooner. Speaking of, where is he?” She glances around. “He was with some alphas. They might be outside.” We chat a bit more before Nathan leads me to the dance floor. “I can’t dance,” I half-whisper, clinging to his hand. “Relax and just follow my lead,” Nathan reassures me, guiding my hands into position. He starts moving slowly from left to right, and when I glance down at our feet, he grunts softly. “Eyes up, flower. That’s how you’ll learn.” “I’ll step on your feet if I don’t look down,” I protest. “You won’t, and even if you do, I won’t complain.” “But you’ll get hurt.” He chuckles, the sound warm and comforting. “That’s sweet of you, looking out for me.” “Of course, I have to. You’re my mate, after all.” “Thank you, flower. But that doesn’t mean I’m stopping the dance,” he says, his tone light but firm. He twirls me away from him, then pulls me back into his arms. “When we get home, we’ll start your dancing lessons.” “I don’t think I’ll like it,” I grumble, already disliking the idea of dancing. “You will. Trust me.” “I trust you,” I reply softly, almost adding “with all my life.” He pulls me closer, his gaze deep and intense. “I can’t wait to make you mine officially, Jessica. To finally make you my Luna,” he says, his voice filled with longing as his green eyes flicker to gold and Declan emerges. “Declan,” I gush, loving the way his golden eyes gaze down at me with pure affection. “Yes, my baby. My love, my heart, my life,” Declan’s rough voice rasps out. “Enjoying yourself?” I nod, glancing around. “It’s my first time at a gathering like this. It feels surreal.” “We’ll have many more together,” Declan promises. “I’ll ask the Council to let us host the next one. By then, you’ll be our Luna and the hostess.” My eyes widen in shock. “Really?! But how will I know what to do?” “You’ll have all the help you need,” Nathan takes over, his voice full of confidence. “You’ll have learned how to be a Luna by then. You’ll be the perfect hostess.” I rest my head on his chest, savoring the slow dance, his warmth, and his comforting scent. In this moment, with him, everything feels right. I want nothing more than to spend the rest of my life with him and his pack. Even if I never find my real family, I’m content as long as Nathan is by my side. “Sorry to interrupt you lovebirds,” Elder De Santos’s voice breaks through the moment. He clears his throat nearby, offering me an apologetic smile. “Sorry, Luna. I need to borrow your Alpha for a minute.” I nod, and Nathan kisses my lips gently. “Stay with the men and don’t go anywhere without them.” “I won’t.” “Promise me.” “I promise,” I say, kissing him back lightly. He nods and walks away with the elder. My eyes follow him, admiring his strong, commanding presence. Pride swells in my chest at the sight of him, and just as I’m lost in my thoughts, he turns, catching my gaze and smiling, his eyes narrowing playfully. My heart flips in my chest, and my face heats with embarrassment. He caught me. “My Alpha is love-struck,” Alex says from behind me, making me blush even more. “And my Luna is too.” “Beta Alex,” I start to correct myself, but he shakes his head. “Just Alex,” he says with a grin. “Let’s get you something to nibble on. You need to rest those legs.”
