CHAPTER 73

961 Words
AMERIE/JESSICA ALPHA NATHAN HUNT AND HIS LUNA. Nathan holds me close as the convoy glides out of the driveway and onto the road. His excitement radiates as he wraps his arms around me. When we reach the massive gates of the pack, they swing open to let us through. A twinge of sadness hits me—this pack has become my true home. It’s funny because I know I’ll be coming back. Nothing will keep me away. The Council has already passed their judgment. When I eventually shift, Nathan will officially claim me as his, I’ll be crowned his Luna, and we can start living our lives together. I try to picture our future and all I can imagine are good memories with Nathan and our babies. Cara will be an amazing aunt, and his mother a wonderful grandmother. She’ll definitely spoil our kids rotten, just like she’s spoiling me now. Though I still want to know my real parents, I’ll settle for the family I’ve found. There’s no sense in withholding my love from them while I yearn to meet my true family. “Penny for your thoughts,” Nathan asks, his warm voice bringing me back. His green eyes sparkle with the same excitement they had when he first saw me at the top of the stairs. Cara was right—I did knock the breath out of her brother when he saw me. I’ll never forget the look in his eyes. “Just thinking,” I reply, continuing when he raises a brow. “About leaving the pack and other things.” “How do you feel about leaving?” “A little sad.” He frowns. “Why? It’s not like you won’t come back.” “I thought the same thing,” I sigh. “But maybe I’m still scared those two will come for me.” At the mention of Saul and Kizziah, Nathan’s demeanor changes. “I’ll destroy them before that ever happens!” he growls, and I can see Declan stirring behind his eyes. “No one will take you away from us, baby,” Declan growls, coming to the surface. “I promise you.” I can’t help but smile at his words. “I know, Declan. I shouldn’t be having such fears.” “It’s natural,” he says, his voice softening, “but know you’re safe with us.” “Thanks,” I whisper, pressing my face into Nathan’s chest as I feel Declan recede, giving Nathan control again. Nathan pulls me tighter, sniffing my hair. “Nothing is going to happen, flower. You’re coming home with me,” he vows. “Close your eyes. I’ll wake you when we arrive.” NATHAN I understand Jessica’s fears, and I’ve put measures in place to ensure nothing goes wrong on this trip. It’s not going to be like the journey to the Council. This time, I have more men, each one fully armed and ready in case of an attack. Seven of my best warriors are with me, guarding us wherever we go during the event. Others will shadow the father and son, reporting their every move to me at regular intervals. Her safety is one of my top concerns. The other is meeting the people De Santos told me about. I hope they show up so we can settle everything about her origins. I need her to connect with her people, to understand herself and her powers. “Five minutes to our destination,” Alex links me. “Thanks, man,” I reply, gently rousing Jessica from my chest. “Wake up, flower. We’re almost there.” I want her to look fresh for the cameras and all the eyes that will be on her at the event. She stirs, pulls away from me, and looks outside. “How long did I sleep?” “Not long,” I say, watching with fascination as she takes out a small compact powder case from her purse. She flips it open, checks her face in the mirror, and snaps it shut when she’s done. She smiles when she catches me watching her. “What? Cara and Mom told me what to do.” “I see,” I nod, smiling back at her. The fact that she’s calling my mother ‘Mom’ is touching. “You still look beautiful.” Alex links me again. “We’re at their gates.” “We’ll be out in a moment,” I tell her, taking her hand. “If you feel the slightest need to leave, let me know, and we’ll go.” She takes a deep breath, nodding. “Okay.” “Be yourself, smile, thank people for their compliments, and squeeze my hand if you need any help.” I need her to know I’m here for her. Nothing and no one will steal my attention tonight—not that they ever did before, but especially not now. “Okay.” The car stops, and the driver steps out, walking around to open my door. “Let’s go,” I say, stepping out first. My men are already lined up at my door. The crowd goes wild as I exit the car. Camera flashes bathe my face, and questions are thrown at me from all sides. I reach back inside, offering my hand to help Jessica out. Her palm is slick with sweat, but I hold it tight, giving it a reassuring squeeze. The moment she steps out, the entire place falls silent for a few seconds before erupting into chaos again with camera flashes and a million questions. “Who is she, Alpha Nathan?” “Is she your mate?” “Tell us her name.” “Who is she?”
