24 EVELYN – SEPTEMBER 1943 Evelyn came in through the back door and took the few steps from the landing to the kitchen. She paused a moment when she heard voices in the back bedroom. She quickly put her purse down on the kitchen table and hurried into the bedroom. A woman was holding Maryann, and Russell sat with Juanita on the rocking chair. What on earth? She looked at her husband. "Russell. Who is this woman?" "Where have you been?" Maryann started to cry, and the woman jostled her just a bit, crooning to quiet her. "Give me my baby." Evelyn marched over and pulled Maryann away. "Who the hell are you?" Instead of answering, the woman turned to Russell. "I should leave. I'll see you at work." Evelyn hoisted the baby to her shoulder, patting her back, and watched the woman walk out
