Ruth woke up and checked the date on her phone. It was Halloween and she had been avoiding the café for four solid days. She had washed Chris’ clothes and even ironed his shirt. Hannah had agreed to go with her to the café that morning after the first lecture was over. Ruth missed Barcelona this time of the year, when they celebrate La Castanyada. She missed panellets, the traditional sweets for the festivities, and the smell of chestnuts invading the streets. Her grandmother used to take her to the fun fair and they would eat chestnuts together in a bench when she was little. She looked up a recipe for those traditional sweets and decided she would make some later that weekend. She only needed to get some almond flour from the shop on the way back.
