CHAPTER 1
Jessica's hands trembled as she held the phone, her heart racing with anticipation. She had been considering Joshua Leonard's proposal for what felt like an eternity, weighing the pros and cons of marrying a man she didn't love. As she thought about her life, about the poverty that had consumed her family, she felt a wave of desperation wash over her. Her parents had passed away, leaving her and her younger sister, Eleanor, to fend for themselves. She had taken on the responsibility of caring for Eleanor, working multiple jobs to provide for her basic needs. But it was getting harder and tougher. The rent was overdue, and Eleanor's school fees were pending. Jessica felt like she was drowning in a sea of debt, with no lifeline in sight. She walked over to Eleanor's room, where her sister was sitting on the bed, doing her homework. Jessica sat down beside her, taking a deep breath. "Eleanor, I need to talk to you about something," Jessica said, her voice barely above a whisper. Eleanor looked up, her big brown eyes filled with curiosity. "What is it, Jessy?" she asked. Jessica took another deep breath, trying to gather her thoughts. "I've been thinking about marrying Joshua Leonard," she said, her voice trembling. Eleanor's eyes widened in surprise. "Why?" she asked, her voice filled with concern. Jessica looked at her sister, feeling a pang of guilt. "Because I want to give us a better life, Ellie," she said, her voice cracking and tears rolling down her cheeks. The tears kept on rolling down her cheeks, mixed with some mucus and Eleanor joined her and they cried like children whose mother has abandoned at the s*******r house and hugged themselves tightly. Suddenly Jessica wiped her tears with firm and determined voice and said, “ Eleanor listen to me, I will be everything a father is to his children, and everything a mother is to her child and I will make sure you and I don't lack anything, I will provide, care and nourish you with love, fight and protect you as long as I have breath in me, no matter how tough it becomes know that you are and you will be my first priority”. Eleanor's eyes filled with emotional tears once more, filled loved and valued and she threw her arms around Jessica's neck and said “You are the best thing that has ever happened to me, thank you for your sacrifice, thank you for loving me and I'm sorry for being stubborn and disrespectful to you all this while”. "And I want to let you know that, I don't want you to marry someone you don't love just because of me" she said, her voice muffled. Jessica hugged her sister tightly, feeling a wave of emotion wash over her when she said “you will not understand now”. "I'm doing this for you, Ellie," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I want to give you a better life." As they hugged, Jessica felt a sense of determination wash over her. She would do whatever it took to give Eleanor a better life, even if it meant sacrificing her own happiness. "I'm going to do it, Ellie," Jessica said, her voice firm. "I'm going to marry Joshua Leonard, and we're going to start a new life together." Eleanor looked up at her, her eyes filled with tears. "Okay, Jessy I'm firmly in support" she said, her voice barely above a whisper. As Jessica stood up, feeling a sense of resolve, she dialed Joshua's number, her heart pounding in her chest. The phone rang, and then Joshua's voice came through, warm and inviting. "Hello?" he said. Jessica's voice trembled as she spoke. "Joshua, it's me. I've made up my mind. I'll marry you." The line went silent for a moment, and then Joshua's voice came through, filled with excitement. "Really? You'll marry me?" Jessica took a deep breath, feeling a sense of determination. "Yes," she said, her voice firm. "I'll marry you." As she hung up the phone, Jessica felt a rush of adrenaline coursing through her veins. She knew that her life was about to change forever. But would she be able to keep up the charade? Would she be able to pretend to love Joshua, when in reality, she was just using him for security? When she turned to walk away, Jessica's eyes met Eleanor's, and she saw the hope and trust shining in them. Jessica's heart swelled with emotion, knowing that she would do whatever it takes to cater for her sister. The weight of her decision settled in, and she felt a sense of resolve wash over her to marry Joshua Leonard, and to make sure Eleanor had the best life possible. But as she smiled weakly at her sister, Jessica couldn't shake off the feeling that she was stepping into a world of uncertainty, one that would test her courage, her wits, and her heart. As Jessica turned away, the sound of her sister's gentle breathing filled the silence, and she felt a lump form in her throat. She knew that she had made a promise to Eleanor, a promise to provide for her, to protect her, and to give her a better life. And she was willing to do whatever it took to keep that promise, even if it meant sacrificing her own happiness. But as she walked away, Jessica couldn't help but wonder... what would the future hold for her and her sister? Would she be able to find happiness in her marriage to Joshua, or would she be forever trapped in a life of duty and obligation? The uncertainty hung in the air like a challenge, and Jessica felt her heart racing with anticipation. She knew that she had taken the first step towards a new life, a life that would be filled with luxury and comfort, but also with secrets and lies. And as she disappeared into the darkness of the hallway, the question echoed in her mind, what would tomorrow bring?
