chapter 1: A chance at love 💕
The sun was just beginning to rise over my grandparents’ compound, painting the walls with gold streaks. My heart felt heavier than the early morning air as I lugged my bag up the steps of my new home. SS1 at a new school — new teachers, new classmates, new everything. And yet, one thing I had made perfectly clear to myself: love was off-limits. After what happened in my last relationship, I swore I would never let anyone break my heart again.
But as I settled into my new room and looked out at the familiar courtyard, a small, stubborn voice whispered inside me: “Maybe… just maybe, give it one more chance.” I shook my head, trying to dismiss it. I had made my decision. Still, I couldn’t help but wonder who — if anyone — this new school would bring into my life.
On my first day, I walked into the science department, my books pressed tightly to my chest. Teachers nodded at me, recognizing me as the new “brilliant student” who had excelled wherever I came from. My classmates whispered and stole glances, but most kept their distance. I didn’t mind. I had come here to study, not make friends.
Or so I told myself.
I scanned the room, checking every face. A few girls caught my attention — their smiles, their laughter, the way they scribbled notes. But none of them were the one I was looking for. My heart remained unmoved. I sighed and sank into my seat, pulling out my notebook.
“Hey, Joshua,” someone whispered from the desk beside me. I looked up to see Tolu grinning. He had this knack for noticing things before anyone else did. “You planning to sit here all mysterious and serious all year?”
I rolled my eyes. “Just focusing on not failing, unlike some people I know.”
He laughed. “Fair enough. But seriously, don’t be so hard on yourself. You’re in a new place — might as well enjoy it.”
I nodded, though my mind wandered elsewhere. Enjoy it… right. I thought about love. About how I had sworn it off. And yet, I couldn’t stop imagining what it would be like to meet someone special here.
As the day went on, classes began, lessons flew by, and I realized something — the girl I had been searching for wasn’t among the obvious candidates. She wasn’t the girl who laughed at the loud jokes or sat in the front row scribbling poetry. No, she was someone I hadn’t noticed… yet.
Little did I know, she was closer than I imagined, sharing the same science classes, passing by me every day. And perhaps, just perhaps, she had noticed me too.
I leaned back in my chair at the end of the day, staring at the hallway through the classroom window. Something told me this year wouldn’t be like the last. Something told me… love might finally find me where I least expected it.
And with that thought lingering, I couldn’t help but smile — even though I had sworn I wouldn’t.
