Finally the last guests found their wraps and made their way to the front of the hotel. The newly engaged hosts bid each good night and carefully closed the beautiful oak doors behind them.
Silence filled the grand hall. Jacob took Netty's hand and kissed it.
“Thank you, my darling.” Jacob's charm was undeniable. “I couldn't have done it without you.”
She smiled knowingly.
“Of course you couldn’t,” she thought to herself, letting him flatter her. It was a silly game, she knew, allowing herself to feel something for him. She told herself it helped keep up the deception. Jacob moved closer, embracing her.
“We are going to be incredibly happy.” His eyes were intent, serious. “You are incredibly beautiful.” She let him kiss her, losing herself just for a moment in his searching mouth
