Chapter 1
Diana’s POV I stood in the center of the Great Hall, my head held high despite the weight of accusation hanging in the air. Hundreds of eyes bored into me, the whispers of the Blue Moon Pack like the hiss of vipers. None of that mattered when I caught Ryan's gaze from where he sat on the Alpha's throne—a position he'd held for only three days since his father's death. Ryan Stewart. My mate. The newly inaugurated Alpha of the Blue Moon Pack. The reason I was standing here today, accepting a crime I didn't commit. "Diana Leon," Elder Thorne announced to the assembly, "has been brought before Alpha Stewart as his first case of judgment. She stands accused of the murder of former Alpha Marcus Stewart. The evidence has been reviewed by the Council of Elders." My fingers curled into fists at my sides as I fought to keep my expression neutral. This wasn't how it was supposed to happen. Ryan had promised me this was temporary, that once he secured his position as Alpha, he would free me. Ryan leaned forward on his throne, his steel-gray eyes unreadable as they swept over me. "Diana Leon. You confessed to this crime three months ago. Do you maintain your confession?" "Yes, Alpha," I replied, the formal address feeling strange on my tongue when speaking to the man I'd shared a bed with just days ago. "I do." The memory of his promise washed over me. "They're coming for me, Diana." Ryan's voice had been rough with desperation that night. "They've found evidence linking me to my father's murder." "That's absurd!" I'd reached for him. "You loved your father." "It doesn't matter. Someone wants me out of the succession. If I'm accused, I'll never become Alpha." His eyes had bored into mine. "But if someone else took the blame..." "You want me to confess to murder?" I'd whispered, stunned. "Just until the succession ceremony is complete," he insisted, clasping my hands. "Once I'm Alpha, I can pardon you. It would only be temporary." "I'll visit every day," he swore. "And when I'm Alpha, you'll be my Luna, as we always planned." "I do love you," I had whispered, already knowing I would do it. He had kissed me then. "Once I'm Alpha, I'll make it right. I promise." Now here I stood, days after his inauguration, expecting the pardon he'd promised. Instead, his expression was cold, distant—nothing like the man who had held me and pledged his love. "Alpha Stewart," Elder Thorne continued, "as this is your first ruling and involves your own father's murder, the Council recommends the maximum sentence. Life imprisonment and the Severing Ritual." My blood ran cold. The Severing Ritual—the magical separation of a wolf from its human. It meant losing Lyra forever. "No," I gasped before I could stop myself. "Alpha, please—" Ryan held up his hand, silencing me immediately. The gesture was practiced, authoritative, as if he'd been Alpha for years rather than days. "Before I pass judgment," he said, his voice carrying throughout the hall, "does the accused wish to speak?" This was it—the moment he would set his plan in motion. He would listen to my plea, show mercy as his first act as Alpha, demonstrating both strength and compassion to his pack. "Alpha Stewart," I began, my voice clear despite my racing heart. "I stand before you as your mate, chosen by the Moon Goddess herself. While I take responsibility for my actions, I ask for your mercy. Our bond—" "Silence," Ryan cut me off, his voice like ice. I faltered, confusion washing over me. This wasn't part of our plan. "You speak of a mate bond?" Ryan continued, rising from his throne. "There is no mate bond between us, Diana Leon. Whatever connection we once shared was severed the moment you took my father's life." The words hit me like physical blows. Lyra, my wolf, howled in agony within me. "Ryan," I whispered, abandoning formality in my shock, "what are you saying?" He descended the dais steps, approaching me with measured strides. "I am saying, Diana Leon, that I reject any claim you might make as my mate. I reject you as my Luna. And I reject your plea for mercy." My legs weakened beneath me. The pain of his rejection clawed through my chest, my wolf thrashing violently in response to his words. I staggered, barely keeping myself upright. "No," I gasped. "You promised. You said once you became Alpha—" "I said a lot of things," Ryan replied coldly, now standing directly before me. "But the truth is simple. You are a murderer. And I could never take a murderer as my Luna." My breath came in shallow gasps as the full weight of his betrayal crashed down on me. The ceremonial rejection of a mate bond was excruciating—a physical, soul-deep pain that dropped many wolves to their knees. I fought to remain standing, even as tears spilled down my cheeks. "Ryan, please," I begged, my voice breaking. "I only confessed to protect you. We both know I didn't kill your father." Something dangerous flashed in his eyes. "Be very careful, Diana. You've already confessed to the crime. To change your story now would only make things worse for you." The threat was clear. If I revealed the truth, he would ensure I suffered even more. "As Alpha of the Blue Moon Pack," Ryan announced, turning to address the gathered wolves, "I pass judgment on Diana Leon for the murder of my father, Alpha Marcus Stewart." I swayed on my feet, my vision blurring as pain radiated through my body. Lyra's anguish compounded my own, her howls echoing inside my skull. The mate bond was being severed with each word he spoke, and it felt like my soul was being torn apart. "Diana Leon is sentenced to life imprisonment in the Northern Territory containment facility," Ryan declared. "Additionally, she will undergo the Severing Ritual at dawn tomorrow, permanently separating her from her wolf as punishment for her treachery." A keening sound escaped my lips as I doubled over, the physical agony of rejection making it impossible to stand. I collapsed to my knees, arms wrapped around my middle as if I could somehow hold myself together. "In light of recent events," Ryan continued above me, unmoved by my suffering, "I wish to announce my chosen Luna without delay. The pack needs stability and strong leadership during this difficult time." No. No, no, no. Lyra's howls intensified, her rage and grief mirroring my own as we both realized the depth of the betrayal. "Sarah Leon," Ryan called out. "Step forward and accept your place as the Luna of the Blue Moon Pack." My step-sister. The final betrayal. Through tear-blurred eyes, I watched Sarah step forward from the crowd, her face radiant with triumph as she took Ryan's outstretched hand. "No!" The scream tore from my throat as I lunged forward, a surge of desperate strength allowing me to grab at Ryan's leg. "You can't do this! You promised me! You know I'm innocent!" The hall erupted in shocked whispers. Two guards instantly moved to restrain me, but Ryan waved them back, looking down at me with disdain. "I never promised you anything," he said, his voice pitched for my ears alone. "You were useful, Diana. But let's be honest—you were never Luna material. No connections, no political savvy." His eyes flicked to Sarah. "Unlike your sister." I writhed on the floor, the physical pain of mate rejection compounding with the emotional agony of his betrayal. My wolf clawed desperately inside me, seeking release, seeking revenge. "You used me," I gasped, my body convulsing with the effort of containing Lyra's rage. "You used my love..." "And you let me," Ryan replied with a cruel smile. "That's what happens when you love too blindly." Sarah approached, her blue eyes cold with victory as she looked down at me. She leaned in close, her blonde hair falling forward like a curtain as she whispered, "Poor, naive Diana. Always believing in fairytales. Always thinking love conquers all." I lunged at her, but my body was too weakened by pain to do more than collapse again. "You knew," I hissed through clenched teeth. "You were part of this." Sarah's smile was all the answer I needed. "Guards," Ryan ordered, turning his back on me as if I were nothing, "take her away. Prepare her for the Severing Ritual at dawn." As the guards dragged me across the floor toward the exit, my agony transformed into rage. Lyra howled within me, pushing against my skin in a desperate bid to emerge and fight. "I trusted you!" I shouted, my voice raw with pain and betrayal. "I loved you!" Ryan didn't even turn around. But Sarah did, her eyes gleaming with victory as she watched me being dragged away. The last thing I saw before the great doors closed behind me was Ryan pulling Sarah close, claiming her lips in a kiss that was meant for me. The kiss that sealed my fate. And in that moment, as the doors slammed shut and my world collapsed around me, I made a silent vow. If I ever escaped this nightmare, I would make them both pay for what they had done. I will survive this, I promised myself. And I will have justice. But deep down, a part of me was dying. The part that had believed in love. The part that had trusted Ryan with everything—my heart, my freedom, my future. Fool, Lyra growled within me. We were such fools. And as they locked me in the cold, damp cell that would be my home until the Severing Ritual, I couldn't help but agree.
