28It was a blowy, cold autumn day and the grey sea in the distance was studded with white horses. The breakwater, just visible in the far distance across the Lady Bay, was vanishing into the gloom. Vince pulled in next to the only other car, a police vehicle, hopped out of Benny, and slid into the other car’s passenger’s seat. ‘G’day, Sarge,’ he said. ‘Bit formal in the cop car. You here on official business?’ ‘Always on duty in my game, Doc,’ Elena answered with her characteristic enigmatic smile. ‘Bit like yours.’ She handed over a paper napkin, a toasted roast beef and horseradish panini, and a steaming coffee. They ate in silence for a few minutes, watching the ocean fade away as the car windows misted up. Soon the world outside disappeared and they were cocooned inside the vehicle
