Two days later, when I arrived for my appointment at the beach pavilion between Nalupuki and Keikikai beaches, Char Siu and some of the girls from her hula halau were already there, looking like shave ice samples in the window of a manapua truck.
Wearing electric pink, yellow, orange, and green high heels, short boxy jackets, and glitter bows, they were practicing what looked like a kapakahi version of the chicken dance to a wicked backbeat.
“No, no, no, no!” Lisa Ling bellowed over the blasting boom box, “Like this!”
On the downbeat she threw her hands in the air, bobbed left, right, swiveled her hips, and turned.
“Now you try!”
She re-cued the music.
