Chapter1
Risana’s Pov
“ You need to be patient with me, Risana will be dying soon, her insurance will be ours, when the mist is cleared I will marry you.” I stood frozen as my husband uttered those words of hope to another on the phone, his back facing me. My eyes fixed on the same man I had thought loved me genuinely for the past ten years.
“I am pregnant.” My voice below a whisper as I muttered. I married him despite what he did, but here he is trying to make promises to another woman. But then he turned sharply towards me, his eyes bored into mine.
“ You are back, you slut. I heard news about how you go around with men but you know I thought they were all false until I saw this…” He threw a pile of photos on my face, forged images of me in different rooms with different men.
These were all fake.
“Where have you been? You said that you were pregnant, didn't you? I am not the father of that bastard you are carrying.” How wise of him to come up with forged photographs, I would have thrown my wedding ring at him ten years ago when I caught him having s*x with my now dead stepsister just a few hours before our wedding.
“What do you mean that you are not the father of our child?” I was a virgin when he married me and he is the only man I have slept with. He was the first man that ever kissed me.
“ I have to pick one, not two.” He raised his hands, his face twisted with anger, I knew he could do something to me any moment. What does he mean by he has to pick one when I am only pregnant with just a male child?
One child.
“What do you mean by two?” My voice trembled, my lips quivering as tears streamed down my cheeks. Was the other woman he fed hope earlier pregnant for him? Or was Cecila not really dead after that aircraft accident?
“Izora can’t be pregnant and neither can you!” He barked furiously. Izora ... .My best friend ….pregnant with my husband’s child?
So she has been spreading her legs behind my back. “You have been sleeping with my best friend?" I gasped, the weight of betrayal crashing my soul.
This was totally unbelievable.
My knees buckled as I collapsed on the cold floor. It all made sense now, she was the one he was making promises to on the phone. He was promising to marry her.
“ Yes I have,” He said without shame “ I need children and you are barren.” “But you are denying mine now, I am pregnant with Nevan after ten years.” My voice broke, a shaky smile on my lips.
After ten years of enduring a loveless marriage, he never gets to accept his son growing inside, unaware that my own very life is slipping away. Or maybe he was aware of it.
“You are in the final stage of gastritis and you have just three months to live,” The doctor’s words kept echoing in my ears like a broken tape.
I was pregnant with a child I would never get to see. I was pregnant with a three months old child, and I just have seven months to live.
“ God why wasn’t I careful with pills just like the last time.” He scoffed, his voice very audible for me to hear. Of course he wanted me to see how useless I am to him.
“ What do you mean you bastard?” I yelled weakly, my vision blurred with my own tears. “Oops…. I didn’t realise I said that out loud,” He scorched beside me, a wicked smile curling on his lips.
“ I have been serving you pills for the past ten years, but you were too dumb to realise it,” He chuckled, narrowing his eyes at me. I stared at him blankly, my breath caught my throat.
Ten years, ten years of shame, ten years of emptiness of wondering what was wrong with me. So….so it has all been him.
This bastard. “ You are a monster,” I whispered.
“ I can see how ungrateful you are, Risana. I did you a favour but you choose to end just like your poor mother.” He chuckled with an evil grin.
My mother died miserably because of the threat she faced as my father’s mistress from his wife—My stepmother.
“ You can call me anything you want, in just three months you will be gone for good.” He stood up brushing the invisible dust from his pants. So he had requested to see the test result so he could mock me with it.
“ Who gives birth to a child, they never got to see,” His smile didn’t waver. I have three months to live and my child has only seven months left.
What was I expecting? Love from a contract marriage? Love from a marriage I was clearly forced into?. My father who made my life a total mess was already dead.
“ You know I was never going to marry you, Izora has always been my lover even before your greedy father pushed me into this nonsense.” He grinned, his face marked with disgust.
My father, Raymond Hayden was a well known billionaire in the whole of New York. I was his illegitimate daughter and only surviving daughter of his, since my step siblings all died in a plane crash.
This marriage was nothing but a proof he wanted me to show before he hands over all his property to me.
“ You should have called it off the moment you felt you could no longer continue. But sleeping with my best friend is totally unacceptable.” I sneered at him but not a single hint of remorse came from him.
“Do you expect me to feel sorry for you or beg for your forgiveness?. Think of those times I needed you as a wife, Risana, but you were focused on your father’s business, proving your worth to him.” He sneered back at me, from what it looked like, he has been f*****g cheating on me for the past ten years and he is obviously confident about it.
“ Let's call this marriage off.” My voice was cold and firm, I thought he was loyal all those years but he just proved to me that he wasn’t. That he was just a scumbag.
“ You have no right to call this marriage off, you need to prove to papa that you are capable of running his company after he dies.” His laugh was low filled with venom, he was indeed a wolf in sheep clothing.
“Oh, I must have failed to announce to you that your father is dead. I am deeply sorry that you couldn’t prove yourself well enough to him, and according to his lawyer his will will be read tonight.”
A faint smile crossed my lips, I was going to have something that would cater for my unborn child while I am gone. I was going to use the money or sell off the properties my father left for me.
“ Babe are you still there?” I heard Izora’s voice over the phone, then it dawned on me that my best friend was indeed dating my husband.
