Chapter 1
**Rose’s POV** “How dare you yell at my mother like this? Who do you think you are?” I shouted, in an attempt to diffuse the tense situation I was in and buy more time. More time for what? I asked myself, but I was livid at this point, so I wasn’t thinking properly. I had left the company where I worked as a cleaner a bit early today and quickly made my way towards my mother’s canteen. As I left, I ignored the murmurs about the chairman’s illegitimate son being expelled from a shareholders’ meeting going round the office, and although I was deeply curious about the events, I didn’t pay them any mind, since gossips were almost always exaggerated. As I rounded the corner to her canteen, I saw her standing outside talking to three men who I assumed were customers. A smile quickly split my face, and I raised my hand to wave at her, when it suddenly froze in the air. My mother was crying, and the men were pointing their fingers at her and yelling, as they made exaggerated gesticulations at the building. I could immediately tell that they were her creditors. Blood rushed to my head and I immediately saw red. How dare they make a scene in front of her canteen? My focus swiftly shifted as it finally dawned on me why my mother had seemed distressed of late. These men had most likely been harassing her here. My heart sank and I quickly rushed to her side, firmly pulling her behind me in an attempt to shield her from their verbal onslaught. “Why are you harassing an old woman like this? Have you no shame?” I continued, demanding an explanation for their behavior. The men were momentarily stunned to see a 5-foot 4 woman with silver eyes and waist-length hair stand up to them. What was even more unbelievable was that I looked like the slightest wind could blow me away with my slim -almost thin, arms. However, they quickly recovered from their initial shock, and their taunts which branded me as the daughter of a debtor quickly struck a nerve, leaving me speechless and overwhelmed. “But we just paid you some money…” I said in anger. However, they laughed at me and reminded me that we were late for the next payment by over two weeks. “If you don’t pay up by the end of the week, we will come here and trash the place.” The short fat man with a balding spot, who was most likely their leader said. “Fine. You can leave now. You will get your money by the end of the week,” I said, in an attempt to diffuse the situation. My mind raced with worry because I didn’t have the money to repay the debt, but I didn’t let it show. I had already used up this month’s salary, but I assured them that we would settle the debt by weekend in a moment of desperation, although I wasn’t certain how I’d manage it. “You better keep your promise, darling, or we will come back and trash the place,” they said as they turned around to leave, which left my mother in tears. I stood there to ensure they left, and afterwards, I led my mother back into the canteen through the backdoor and spoke reassuringly to her, while masking my own apprehensions. “It’s okay, mother. Everything will be fine,” I said, attempting to provide some comfort despite the mounting uncertainties clouding my mind. I took her to the spare room reserved for staff and made her lie down on the bed, and after ensuring that she was resting, I quickly attended to the customers in the café, ensuring that they were all served and satisfied. After I has bid the last customer goodnight, I cleaned up and sat in one of the chairs, consumed with the pressing concern of paying back the loan before the looming weekend. So many different thoughts weighed heavily on my mind and filled me with worry, and I was unable to find solace in sleep. I sat like this in silence for some time, when a sudden call shattered the quietude. “Who could be calling at this late hour?” I said out loud as I looked at my phone, slightly irritated. My irritation grew some more when I answered and was greeted by a familiar, yet irksome voice. It belonged to the man who had stolen my first kiss just a few days ago, whose name I didn’t even know. I became so enraged when I recalled the events of that night, that I abruptly ended the call, refusing to entertain any conversation with him. However, he didn’t know how to give up, and his persistent calls, despite my refusal to talk to him, continued to disrupt my thoughts. I finally answered his call after some time, ready to rebuff any attempts at conversation. “What the hell do you…” I started to say, but his deep, husky, commanding voice quickly interrupted me. “I have a job offer for you, one that you may like,” he said. My initial irritation turned to intrigue as he proposed a very lucrative job offer that would even pay me in advance. The lure of financial relief prompted an immediate change in my demeanor, and without a second thought, I quickly accepted to meet him at the location he provided. After ensuring my mother went home, I closed the café and quickly dashed to a friend’s house to borrow his car. As I made my way to the location, I thought of just how lucky I was to get this opportunity that might just provide the means of resolving my mother’s pressing debts. Maybe there truly was a God, because he had just answered my silent, unuttered prayers. I arrived at the location and realized that it was a graveyard. Confusion and doubts swirled in my mind as I stared at the familiar gates once again. Why was he so preoccupied with this place? Could he be a vampire? I thought vampires only drink blood? Could it have been blood and not wine he was drinking the other night we met? I quickly chided myself for my ridiculous thoughts and focused on the pressing matter at hand which had eclipsed my uncertainties. I needed to secure the money for my mother’s debt, and this drove me to set aside the perplexing enigma and focus solely on my urgent need for funds. **Lucas’ POV** I had just had another run-in with my stepmother, and in a moment of emotional vulnerability, I made my way to my mother’s resting place. Exhausted by the events of the past few days, I sat by her grave and leaned on her gravestone, feeling upset and bitter as I grappled with the weight of my circumstances. I stayed there for a few hours, and only decided to leave when it started to get dark and really cold. I thought of calling the guards to pick me, but I didn’t want any of them to see me like this, so I took out my phone to call the woman from the other night; however, the unexpected occurred. She heard my voice only momentarily before abruptly hanging up, which left me shocked and flabbergasted at her actions. “How dare she hang up on me?” I said out loud and quickly redialed her number, but she ignored it. I didn’t let that deter me however, and after numerous repeated attempts, she finally picked up. She started to say something, but I didn’t let her finish. I quickly pitched in my job offer, and after telling her about the pay, she immediately agreed to meet up with me, which was a glimmer of hope in my quest to reclaim what was rightfully mine. I shared the location and awaited her arrival, and she finally arrived about an hour later in a car that was different from the one she normally drove. I felt a bit disappointed because I was getting quite fond of it. Perhaps it was out of commission. I put my disappointment aside and quietly entered the backseat, and as we embarked on the journey to a nearby bar, an uncomfortable silence lingered between us. Her demeanor was devoid of its usual cheerfulness, and after sensing her unease, I changed the previous location and asked her to drive to the Mogan mansion instead. That seemed to make her relax a little. As I sat in silence and occasionally observed her face through the rear-view mirror, a faint memory of our night the previous day came to my mind; however, it seemed like the more I tried to hold on to it, the more it slipped through my fingers. After struggling like this for a while, I finally decided to broach the subject, “Did something happen during our last meeting? It seems like you’re upset with me,” I said, trying to understand the abrupt change in her behavior following our last interaction. However, as soon as I mentioned our meeting, she suddenly stopped the car and turned to stare at me with a death glare. She did this for a few seconds before continuing to drive in silence, leaving me baffled by her puzzling reaction to my seemingly innocent question. What really happened that day? We drove in silence for a long time, and I finally mustered the courage to speak up again. “About the proposal,” I began. “I’ll pay you five hundred thousand dollars if you agree to a business deal.” A look of confusion and uncertainty flashed through her eyes; however, I ignored it and continued on. “A marriage contract for three months. It’s purely a business arrangement. Nothing more.” She was silent for a moment, but I could tell that she was considering my words. I felt a sense of triumph because I knew that she probably couldn’t refuse my proposal. I was about to tell her the details of the offer, when she suddenly smiled and said, “I don’t think so.” I was quickly taken aback by her unexpected refusal and was about to convince her otherwise, when she suddenly pulled over and shocked me even more.
