Did I get detention!?
I was running late for school. I burst through the doors and ran for my locker. I fumbled with the combination, threw my backpack in, grabbed a couple of things, slammed it shut, and started running. I was never going to hear the end of it. My history teacher, Mr. Pearson, hated tardiness. While I’d never been late before, I’d seen other people come in late and get detention, even if it was just a minute. I skidded to a halt in front of the door, my stomach forming a knot. Hesitantly, I pulled the door open. I saw Mr. Pearson’s eyes flick over to me and a smirk appear on his lips. “Ms. Bridger, how nice of you to finally join us.” He started, turning to face me. “I’m sorry Mr. Pearson, I-” I got cut off by a slip of paper being handed to me. “Detention. My office, 3 PM.” I grabbed it and started down the aisle toward my seat, some students staring wide-eyed at me. I was never late. “Oh, and Charlie?” I turned to look at him. “Please don’t be late.” He finished, smirk still on his face. Asshole. It’s not like I meant to be late, but I had a very late night last night. It was the second time in five months I had shifted. I was a werewolf. Not sure how, my parents were human, but that’s who I was. Shifting was terribly painful. Even with speedy healing, it hurt. I groaned as I say, my ribs still hurting. I felt someone watching me. I looked over and saw that I had caught the eye of Micah Wood and his best friend, Cole Miller. “Are you okay?” Micah whispered to me. God, he was gorgeous. He was tall, probably 6’3”, with gorgeous short brown hair and stunning hazel eyes. I had a crush on him since we were freshmen. We weren’t friends, but we ran into each other occasionally. “Yeah, I’m good, just sore,” I said. I had to be careful. Nobody knew what I was. I needed to keep it a secret. I heard Mr. Pearson put down the piece of paper he was holding. My hearing was very good. “Mr. Wood, Ms. Bridger, is there something you’d like to share with the class?” He said, looking both Micah and me in the eyes. It sent a shiver down my back. His blue eyes were bright and cold. “No Mr. Pearson,” I said quietly. “Good, now...” He started on his lecture again. “I can’t believe he gave me detention Miranda!” I grumbled at lunch. Any other teacher would have given me a warning. “Well, you were late. What else did you expect?” My best friend said, taking a bit of her sandwich. “I’m a good student! I’ve never been late before.” I whined, pouting at her. “Suck it up, buttercup.” She shrugged. The bell rang a few minutes later. Great. Gym. I walked into the locker room to see Amber Hoffstead and her witches of friends already there. I braced myself. Amber hated me. I never did anything to her, but she had it out for me. I started getting changed when I felt a shove on my shoulder. “Oops, sorry Charlie.” She sneered, drawing out my name. I ignored her which she hated. I just needed to finish changing and get out of this room already. I got up to leave when she shoved me again. “Did I say I was done with you?” She growled, looking me in the eyes, her red hair framing her face. She was about the same height as me at 5’9”. “Well, I’m done with you, so...” I pushed past her into the gym. Everyone else was there already. “Okay guys, we’re running the mile today, everyone outside.” Coach Statler said, clapping her hands. I rolled my eyes. Piece of cake. I loved running. Everyone else groaned. “Too bad, outside!” Coach Statler shouted. We all started dutifully walking down to the track when I felt two hands push me hard. I lost my footing and started rolling down the hill. I heard Amber and her friends laughing as I rolled, leaves sticking in my hair and gravel scraping my knees and arms. This was her payback for shoving past her in the locker room. I came to a stop, hitting my head on the sidewalk, giving me a bloody nose. I sat up, touched my face, and pulled back my hand, seeing a good amount of blood. “Charlie, you okay? Amber, what the hell, why did you push her?” I heard Micah shout at Amber as he put his hand on my back. I just nodded, watching as the scrapes on my arms and legs started to heal. “I didn’t push her, she fell,” Amber said sweetly, glaring at me. Micah helped me up. Why was he paying so much attention to me? He never has before. I saw him glare at Amber and she scowled back at him. “Hey Charlie, you’ll be alright.” Cole slapped me on my shoulder. I groaned again and looked up at him. He was 6’2” with black hair and green eyes. The girls drooled over him as much as they drooled over Micah. He also worked with me at the shoe store in town. Crap, work. “Hey Cole, I’m going to be late for work today,” I said, walking over to the track, still wiping blood from my face. “It’s all good. I’ll tell Adam you’ll be late.” He laughed behind me. Glad he thought my detention was funny. “Alright everyone, let’s go!” Coach Statler yelled as we arrived at the track.
