Chapter 6

2058 Words
EVER since Chase was elected mayor, he has been busy with his daily routine. Even his personal priorities have not been given much attention lately. Aside from serving the town, he is also busy with the Bus Transport business of their family. As much as possible, Chase ensures that there will be no problems with the buses traveling to the neighborhood cities. He is hands-on with that and doesn't want any passengers to be harmed because of them. Aside from that, he is also an only child. So he is the only one who takes care of everything, especially since his Daddy has already retired. Chase could have avoided entering politics. But his family's heart is already there. They want to serve the town and don't want to give Los Angeles to other politicians. Not because they are selfish. Rather, they are afraid that the governance there might change and the townspeople will suffer. Plans for Los Angeles and business became his priority. And last month, an incident happened where there was a collision between a bus and a private vehicle while it was heading to Long Beach Airport. He had to talk to the injured passengers because of that. He had to settle things, so Chase was busy all day. In his being so busy, he forgot that day was also his anniversary with Francine as sweethearts. That was their first anniversary since they became a couple last year when he met her at the city hall. It was vacation time then, and he was observing how his Daddy's work was being done in the city hall because the latter was their current governor at that time, and it was also his last term. And because he was planning to run in the next election to replace his daddy, and he knew that their family was already known in Los Angeles because of his father's good service and he was sure to win, he made it a daily habit to go to the city hall. It just so happened that he met Francine there because she was currently doing a summer job in his Daddy's office. Yes, and Chase admits that he knows many beautiful and sophisticated women. There were his classmates in college, the daughter of politicians, and some were even his exes. But he admits that Francine's appeal is different to him. She is very different compared to the women he has met. She is far from his type. She is just quiet and doesn't speak loudly. You can also tell that she is conservative, far from his liberated exes. So, before long, Chase liked Francine. He even thought that he had found the woman he would present at the altar. That's why he courted her. At first, Francine didn't like him, and she said that her priority was her studies and her family first. But Chase was too persistent. He didn't stop the young woman until he eventually made her fall in love with him. They became a couple, and every month, they are celebrating their monthsary. But when the campaign day came, he lost time for her. He tries to give her time. Fortunately, she understands him. Until he won the election. That's when he introduced Francine to his parents. And she also introduced him to her parents. Although he has legalized Francine, he has not yet made their relationship public. Because Francine doesn't want it to be crowded and judged because their status in life are far apart. So Chase just agreed to that even though he didn't want to at first. Despite being busy with work, he and Francine still see each other. It's just that it has become infrequent. Until their anniversary day came. He really had plans about that. It's just that Chase' forget it because as soon as he woke up this morning, he immediately received bad news. So all day he took care of that. He settled with the passengers who were injured inside their bus. He also personally accompanied them to the hospital, and he pleaded with their families because he wanted to make sure that the passengers were okay. He was very tired that day and arrived home late at night. He didn't even notice Francine's several calls because his attention was focused on what had happened. When he arrived at the mansion, he was surprised to find Valentina there, the daughter of his mommy's friend and also one of his exes. What they had before was just a game. Chase just indulged her, and she kept chasing after him. And when he broke up with her, he thought she would stop bothering him. It turned out that her obsession with him would only get worse. She quickly approached him and greeted him with a hug. Chase was even more surprised when she pressed her lips to his. "Oh, Chase! You look stressed, darling! Do you want me to heat up your night like before? To get rid of your tiredness?" she said and wrapped both arms around his neck. "Wait a minute, Valentina—" he protested. But before he could remove her arm from his neck, he heard something break. And when he looked for what it was, Chase saw that the large vase in the living room had fallen over and was broken. But that wasn't what caught his attention. Because from there, he saw Francine and she was staring at him. She was near the door and obviously had just entered. She was looking at Valentina's arm wrapped around him. Chase stopped because of that. "Babe—" But before he could catch her, she quickly ran out the door. "Francine!" he chased after her when he got outside. He reached for her arm, but she quickly brushed his hand away and shook her head at him while crying. "Babe, let me explain..." he said, but she just shook her head at him. "Heat up your night like before? So you have a woman, Chase? Why? Aren't you satisfied with just the kiss that I can give you now?" Francine said to him, hurt. "Honey, it's not what you think..." Chase said, trying to explain. Yes, it's true that in their one year together, they have only kissed. They haven't gone beyond that. But it's not true that he's not satisfied with that. He loves Francine, and even if she doesn't give herself to him now, he's happy. Because Chase also plans to present her at the altar clean and whole. But Francine doesn't seem to want to listen to him because she just shook her head at him. "I went here. I came straight from university because I was worried about you. I also heard about what happened, so I wanted to check on you. I didn't even think that it was our anniversary today because I know your work is more important. But this is all I get to see?" Francine's tears fell again. She also shook her head and was about to turn away from him. Chase stopped when she said that it was their anniversary today. It really slipped his mind. But he chased after the woman he loves. "Babe, please let me explain. Valentina, she's just my ex. I was surprised by what she did. I was caught off guard. Please believe in me, babe..." he pleaded. But Francine's mind is closed. "Who would believe you? Your ex who still visits you here? Still kisses you? That's something else. How would I know what else you're doing behind my back? You know what, Chase? Since you don't have time for me anyway, and it's obvious that you still have a connection with your ex, let's just end this. Go back to her." "What?! Babe, no! You can't do this!" Chase said and was about to reach for Francine's arm, but she backed away from him again." "I should be greeting you with a 'Happy Anniversary' today. But, 'I'm breaking up with you' is what I'm going to say to you today," Francine said and then quickly ran out of their mansion. He even saw her bitter smile at him. And now, he has been pursuing her for three weeks. Although he hasn't failed, he can only call and text her during weekdays. He visits her at her house every weekend. He's there early every Saturday. But not once in those three weeks has he gotten a response from Francine. He has also talked to her parents about their situation. But still, just like her not responding to his messages and calls, she won't come down to see him. Now, even though the weather is bad and he came from San Fernando earlier, he still went straight to the Adams' house. But two hours have passed, the cup of coffee that Francine's father made for him has already cooled down, and he has already excused himself to rest because it's already twelve midnight, Francine still won't come down to see him even though her mother has knocked on her door several times. She is really angry with him and doesn't seem to want to make up with him. But Chase won't give up even though he's already closing his eyes from sleepiness and tiredness. "Coffee is not enough to warm your body, Mayor..." From his deep thoughts, Chase looked up when someone suddenly spoke in front of him. Her voice was hoarse, and he saw her placing a few bottles of wine on the table. He doesn't know the woman by name, but he knows that she is Francine's twin. He is aware that the latter has a twin because Francine once told him that. Chase saw the woman sit down in front of him and then opened the wine and poured it into a glass and then handed it to him. What is she doing? He frowned slightly when she leaned forward, causing her cleavage to be exposed to his view. Despite the cold weather, she was only wearing a sleeveless top and a denim shorts. Chase looked away. "No thanks. I should go," he said and was about to stand up. It's almost one in the morning. It seems Francine really has no plans to come down to see him. Never mind, it's Sunday tomorrow. He'll just come back earlier. "C'mon..." Francine's twin stopped him. He knows that Mrs. Adams has already said the latter's name, he just can't remember what it is. "It's dangerous to go home. The rain has gotten stronger. Surely there are roads that are difficult to pass and maybe there is even flooding. You'll just have a hard time. You might even get stuck on the road," she added. Chase heaved a deep breath. He thought about what Francine's twin said. But in the end, he didn't listen to her. Instead, he reached for his jacket on the sofa and put it on. "Can I ask a question? What's your purpose here? Why do you always come here?" Chase stopped walking away when he heard her question. Doesn't she know that he is the twin's girlfriend? From the corner of his eyes, he saw her neck move up and down as she drank the wine. "Maybe I can help you with what you need. It seems very important because even in the morning, and now it's midnight, you're still here," she said again. Chase turned to her. He stared at Francine's twin. And maybe, she's right. Because he knows that usually when there are twins, they are close to each other. So maybe she can help him. Maybe she could convince her twins to talk to him. So Chase cleared his throat. He was hoping that through the person he was talking to now, they could still reconcile. He just ignored the idea that she didn't seem to know that he and Francine were a couple, which made him doubt if the twins were really close to each other. All Chase knew was that his girlfriend had a twin. But not once, in the several times he visited the Adams' house from when he was still dating her until they reached one year, had he seen her, except last Saturday. That was the first time he faced Francine's twin in person. "It's Francine," he said directly, looking into her eyes."
