Chapter 1:The Pack Cripple
The freezing well water bit into the raw cracks of Elena’s hands as she wrung out the heavy, dirt-caked rag. Her knees ached fiercely against the hard stone floor. For three hours, she’d been on her hands and knees, scrubbing away the mud tracks left behind by the BloodMoon Pack’s elite warriors. At twenty years old, while other wolves her age were celebrating their strength and running wild, Elena was basically a slave. Why? Because she was wolfless. A genetic freak. In a world where brute strength and predatory power dictated your worth, Elena possessed absolutely nothing. No wolf form, no heightened senses, no powers. "Keep scrubbing, omega! Miss Tanya wants this hall spotless before the guests arrive!" a heavy-set guard barked as he walked past, deliberately kicking a bit of dirt onto the patch she had just cleaned. Elena clamped her jaw shut and didn't say a word. She just kept her head down, wiping away the dirt. She was used to it. But tonight was different. Tonight was the Blue Moon Ceremony. It was the sacred night when the Moon Goddess revealed fated mate bonds to everyone who had reached maturity. A tiny, fragile spark of hope flared in Elena’s chest. The mate bond was a divine law; it didn't care about pack rank or physical power. Please, Elena prayed desperately in her head, closing her eyes tight. Just give me a nice mate. Anyone. Even a low-ranking omega from a different pack. Just let someone take me away from this living hell. "Look at the pack cripple, still dreaming," a sharp, mocking voice sneered from above. Elena didn't even need to look up to know who it was. She knew that annoying, high-pitched voice anywhere. It was Tanya, the Beta’s spoiled daughter. Tanya walked right onto the freshly cleaned stone floor, deliberately grinding her mud-stained leather boots into the wet surface. Behind her stood two of her high-ranking friends, chuckling like hyenas. "Hey, trash, I'm talking to you," Tanya snapped, tapping her boot against Elena's raw fingers. Elena slowly pulled her hands back, maintaining her composure. "I'm working, Tanya. The Alpha wanted the hall ready." "Did I give you permission to speak my name?" Tanya scoffed, her eyes flashing with malice. With a sudden, hard kick, Tanya sent Elena’s wooden bucket flying. CLATTER! Frigid, dirty water splashed violently across the floor, soaking Elena’s threadbare tunic and completely drenching a small pile of dried marigold roots she had spent all morning harvesting. "Oops. My bad," Tanya laughed, entirely devoid of remorse. She crossed her arms, looking down her nose. "But a useless omega like you is used to being wet and dirty anyway. Tell me, are you seriously planning on showing your face at the ceremony tonight, Elena?" Elena gripped her wet rag tight, her knuckles turning white. "Everyone who is twenty has to attend. It's the pack law." "Law? You think laws apply to a broken tool like you?" Tanya mocked, stepping closer until her boot was inches from Elena's face. "Let me tell you a secret, b***h. No male wolf wants a broken, wolfless mate. If a high-ranking wolf gets stuck with you, it’ll ruin his bloodline. If I were you, I’d lock myself in the cellar and stay there so you don't embarrass us in front of the neighboring packs." "Yeah, imagine being stuck with a mate who can't even shift," one of Tanya's friends giggled. "You'd have to protect her like a fragile human toy." Elena swallowed her anger, keeping her gaze locked on the floor. But she wasn't just taking the abuse; she was observing. As Tanya shifted her weight, Elena noticed the slight, unnatural tilt in Tanya’s left hip and the subtle tremor in her right ankle. It was a classic sign of a poorly healed training injury. Keep training like an i***t without fixing that joint, you arrogant b***h, Elena thought with cold, bitter satisfaction, and you’ll be a permanent cripple yourself by winter. Elena’s mom had been the pack’s chief healer before she died, and she had taught Elena everything about anatomy, rare herbs, and physical medicine. The pack thought Elena was empty-handed, but she was smarter than all of them combined. She just kept her mouth shut because showing talent only got you beaten harder in the BloodMoon pack. "Whatever. She's not even worth our time," Tanya's other friend said, checking her nails. "The bonfire is starting soon and the future Alpha is about to make his entrance. Let's go get prime seats." "See you at the bonfire, loser," Tanya retorted, tossing her blonde hair before walking away, leaving a trail of muddy footprints behind her. Elena waited until their footsteps completely faded before she finally let out a shaky breath. She looked at her ruined herbs, picked up her dented bucket, and stood up. Her body ached, but her mind was set. She was going to that ceremony. A few hours later, the forest outside was alive with excitement and howling. Elena retreated to her tiny, freezing room in the cellar. She washed the grime and dirty floor-water from her face with the last bit of clean water she could find. She pulled on a simple, faded green dress from an old wooden chest. It was worn at the seams, but it had belonged to her mother. It was the only thing she had left. She didn't have fancy jewelry or makeup like Tanya, but her purple eyes caught the dim candlelight, glowing with a quiet defiance. She walked out into the grand courtyard. A massive bonfire threw giant orange flames into the midnight sky. The air smelled thick with roasted meat, alcohol, and pine trees. Hundreds of wolves were laughing, drinking, and roughhousing. Elena immediately slipped into the deep shadows near the tree line, wrapping her arms around herself to stay invisible. The sheer weight of so many dominant Alphas and Betas in one place created an oppressive aura that made it hard for a wolfless girl to even breathe. Suddenly, a loud horn blew, and the crowd went completely dead silent. A figure stepped up onto the high stone platform beneath the burning bonfire. It was Killian. The future Alpha of the BloodMoon Pack. Elena’s breath hitched. He was devastatingly handsome, tall, and packed with lethal muscle. His dark hair was styled back, and his jawline looked like it was carved from marble. He radiated pure, unadulterated dominance. The moment he stood under the firelight, the whole pack erupted into fierce, deafening cheers. He was their golden boy. The ultimate predator. Killian raised a single hand, and everyone shut up instantly. His dark eyes scanned the sea of faces, looking proud and powerful. Then, it hit. The moment Killian’s gaze swept over the dark, forgotten corner where Elena stood, a violent jolt of electricity snapped through her veins. It felt like a physical shockwave hit her heart, radiating directly through her bloodstream. The noise of the crackling fire and the whispers of the crowd completely faded into white noise. Her inner soul, dormant for twenty years, suddenly screamed out in absolute recognition. The fated mate bond had snapped into place. Elena gasped, clutching her chest as her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. Killian? The future Alpha... is my fated mate? For a wild, beautiful second, a massive wave of relief washed over her. She wasn't going to be a slave anymore. The Moon Goddess hadn't abandoned her. She was going to have a protector the strongest male in the entire territory. She wouldn't have to scrub floors. Tanya would never touch her again. On the platform, Killian froze. His chest heaved violently as the bond hit him like a runaway truck. His dark eyes locked right onto Elena trembling in the dirt shadows. But he didn't look happy. He didn't look relieved. As the realization of exactly who his fated mate was sank in, Killian’s handsome face twisted into an expression of absolute, venomous disgust. He looked at her as if she were a toxic roach he wanted to crush under his boot. He looked humiliated that his pristine bloodline was tied to her. Killian walked right to the edge of the stone platform. He took a deep breath, filled his lungs, and let out a deafening Alpha roar that literally shook the leaves on the trees, pointing his finger directly at Elena's chest. "Look at this absolute joke!" Killian shouted, his booming voice echoing across the silent, stunned courtyard.
