David walked into the backyard and saw Carolina and Miranda sitting together by the pool. The water sparkled under the afternoon sun. Miranda was drawing on a piece of paper while Carolina watched her with a soft smile. When Miranda looked up and saw her father, she dropped the paper and ran straight to him.
“Daddy!” she shouted.
David caught her in his arms and lifted her high. He spun her around once before he set her down and hugged her tight.
“I missed you so much,” he said.
“I missed you too,” Miranda answered. “Mommy said you went to find her. Is she really back?”
David nodded and looked over at Carolina. She stood up slowly and walked toward them. Her steps were still a little weak but her eyes were bright.
“She is back,” David said. “And she is safe now.”
