David woke up slowly. The room in Lena’s apartment was still dark. Only a thin line of light came through the curtains. Micah lay beside him, her head on his chest, one hand resting on her stomach. He watched her sleep for a moment. Her breathing was soft and even. He pulled her closer and kissed the top of her head. “You are everything to me,” he whispered. “You and this baby. I will keep you safe. I will come home to you every time. I love you so much.” Micah stirred. She opened her eyes and looked up at him. A small smile touched her lips. “I love you too,” she said quietly. She shifted closer. Her fingers traced his chest. For a long time they just lay there, bodies warm against each other.
