Chapter 8: The Phone Call.

975 Words
"Sometimes, a phone call lasts only a few seconds, its words few and simple. Yet its echoes linger for a lifetime. That night, one such call draped a blanket of unease over an evening that had, until then, been filled with laughter and celebration. None of us had the slightest idea that this brief conversation carried with it countless worries, unanswered questions, and a chain of unforeseen events. It was only later that we understood—some phone calls do not merely deliver news; they alter the course of destiny itself." Just as the wedding ceremony was drawing to its final moments, the groom's father received a phone call. The instant he answered it, the color drained from his face. Without uttering a single word or offering any explanation, he quietly walked away and left the venue. His sudden departure did not go unnoticed. Everyone exchanged puzzled glances, wondering what could have happened. Sensing the gravity of the situation, my father and the other elders decided not to waste another moment. The bride's farewell was carried out immediately, and soon everyone left with the newlyweds for the temporary accommodation. Throughout the journey, my father kept trying to reach the groom's father. Again and again, he dialed his number, only to be met with the same cold, lifeless response. "The number you are trying to reach is currently outside the network coverage area." With every failed attempt, the uneasiness settled deeper into everyone's hearts. Meanwhile, the groom's father had barely begun his journey toward the accommodation when another call came through. This time, the news was devastating enough to change his destination entirely. Without hesitating for even a second, he turned his vehicle toward the hospital. His mind was consumed by countless questions, while his heart sank beneath the weight of terrifying possibilities he dared not put into words. The truth was this... As the wedding rituals neared their end, the groom's father had been making sure everything was in order for the return journey when his phone suddenly rang. He answered at once. The voice on the other end spoke only a single sentence— "Please... get to the accommodation immediately." He had barely opened his mouth to ask what had happened when the call was abruptly disconnected. The brief yet mysterious message left him deeply unsettled. But with no clue about what had actually gone wrong, he decided it was best not to alarm anyone. Silently, he slipped away from the wedding venue and set off toward the accommodation. He had covered nearly half the distance when his phone rang again. This time, it was an unknown number. The moment he answered, a hurried voice on the other end said, "Don't go to the accommodation. Head straight to the hospital." His heart lurched. "The hospital? Why? What happened? Who's there? Is everyone alright?" he asked in quick succession, panic creeping into his voice. But the caller offered only a single reply. "Your father has been taken to the hospital." Before he could ask another question, the line went dead once again. A nameless fear tightened around his heart. The rest of the journey passed in agonizing silence, his mind torn between desperate prayers and terrifying possibilities. Every passing minute felt unbearably long. When he finally reached the hospital, the truth unfolded before him. Only a short while earlier, his father's condition had suddenly taken a critical turn. At first, those around him had tried to stabilize him at the accommodation, hoping it was only temporary. But as his condition deteriorated rapidly, they had no choice but to rush him to the hospital. That was why everyone had been trying so desperately to reach him. Inside, the doctors were doing everything they could. Outside the emergency room, the groom's father sat in restless silence, his thoughts spiralling out of control. Only one question echoed relentlessly in his mind. "How could this happen? Barely half an hour ago, I left Father at the accommodation to get some rest..." Inwardly, he thanked the school administration for recognizing the seriousness of the situation and acting without delay. Had they not rushed his father to the hospital in time... only God knew what the outcome might have been. Lost in those troubling thoughts, he suddenly heard the doors of the operating room swing open. The doctor stepped outside. The words that followed were enough to shatter the ground beneath his feet. For a few endless moments, it felt as though time itself had come to a standstill. He had barely begun to process the devastating news when his phone rang once again. This time, it was my father calling. The moment the network signal returned, my father had tried to reach him. Whatever he heard during that brief conversation only deepened the turmoil already raging inside him. Yet, despite everything, he held himself together. Swallowing his emotions, he chose not to reveal the truth to anyone. Instead, he simply said, "I couldn't explain everything over the phone. You'll know soon enough. Until then... please pray." The moment the words "please pray" left his lips, an unsettling silence settled over the gathering. An invisible wave of anxiety swept through everyone. Questions began surfacing from every direction. "What happened?" "Is everyone alright?" "Why are we being asked to pray?" No one understood what was going on. But my father remained silent. His gaze was fixed somewhere far away, as though he had drifted into thoughts too heavy to put into words. The worry etched across his face made one thing painfully clear— Whatever had happened was far from ordinary. At that moment, all we knew was that something had gone terribly wrong. What we didn't know was just how grave the situation truly was... or how profoundly it would change the course of our lives in the days that followed.
