Chapter 1: The Decision.
Even today, whenever I think back to that day, an indescribable sense of anxiety grips my heart. It all began with what seemed like a simple insistence. If only we had known then that this one decision would leave such a deep mark on our lives. A fear that never truly left my heart... A fear that keeps finding its way back into my thoughts, one excuse or another. This is a story from my childhood, yet even today, I have never been able to free myself from its shadow. It all started one day when my grandmother received an invitation to a wedding. It wasn't meant for her alone—it was for the entire family. The wedding was to take place in a village, far away from the city. The moment the invitation arrived, Grandma made her decision. "Everyone is going." After all, this wasn't just another wedding. It was the celebration of close relatives. In fact, the groom was my father's cousin—his uncle's son. The relationship was so close that refusing the invitation wasn't even an option. In the end, everyone had no choice but to agree. Everyone... except my mother. She stood firm. She said that the journey to the village would be exhausting, the summer heat unbearable, and on top of that, our exams were just around the corner. No matter what anyone said, she wasn't willing to go. Her decision was final. Now, our last hope rested with Dad. We waited impatiently for him to return from work, hoping he would somehow convince Mom. We wanted nothing more than to attend the wedding with all our cousins and enjoy every moment together. But fate had other plans. That evening, Dad was unusually late. We finally called him to ask when he'd be home. He replied gently, "I'll be a little late today. You all should go to sleep." What he didn't know was that his return wasn't being awaited for an ordinary reason. We were waiting because we believed only he could persuade Mom and make us part of that journey. Gathering every ounce of courage we had, we finally told him what was in our hearts. From that moment on, all our hopes rested on him. We were certain that if anyone could change Mom's mind, it was Dad. It was almost as if he had been waiting for us to ask. The moment we requested him to convince Mom, he smiled and said without hesitation, "Of course. I'll talk to your mother. Now don't worry... just go to sleep." Hearing those words filled us with indescribable joy. We couldn't contain our excitement. We rushed straight to our cousins and happily shared the good news. "Maybe we'll get to come with you after all!" They looked at us eagerly. "Did Auntie finally agree?" We shook our heads. "Not yet... but Dad promised he'll convince her." The moment they heard that, smiles spread across their faces too. Now everyone was waiting with us, hoping Dad's mission to convince Mom would be a success. But time seemed to have stopped. Every passing minute felt longer than the last. Dad still hadn't come home. We sat there, waiting anxiously. Then, instead of Dad, Mom's voice echoed through the house. "Haven't you all gone to bed yet? How long are you going to keep talking? Go to your rooms right now and get some sleep!" The moment we heard her voice, we quietly walked back to our rooms. But sleep was the last thing on our minds. Even as we lay in our beds, our thoughts were fixed on only one thing— Had Dad come home? Would he be able to convince Mom? Would we finally get to go? Waiting... and waiting... Somewhere between hope and exhaustion, sleep finally took over. The next morning, Mom's voice woke us up. The very first thought that crossed our minds was the conversation from the previous night. Without wasting a second, we hurried straight to our parents' room. The moment Mom saw us, she frowned slightly and asked, "What is it? Why are you all here? Go wash your faces and get ready for school." But our eyes weren't on her. They were fixed on Dad. He was quietly eating his breakfast, so calmly that it almost seemed as if he hadn't even noticed us—or as though we weren't waiting for his answer at all. Finally, unable to hold ourselves back any longer, we gathered the courage to ask, "Dad... what did Mom say?" Dad remained silent. We asked him again. But once more, silence was all we got. By then, Dad's silence had begun to make us angry... and at the same time, tears welled up in our eyes. Seeing the disappointment on our faces, Dad finally broke his silence. "My dear... your mother said no." The moment those words left his lips, our eyes filled with tears, and we burst into sobs. But instead of comforting us, Dad started laughing. We looked at him in complete confusion. "Why are you laughing?" we asked. With a smile, he replied, "Because you're crying." We couldn't understand what was so funny about it. We shot him an annoyed look and turned to leave the room. Just as we took a step toward the door, Dad called after us. "Hey, wait! Where are you going? At least listen to the whole story. Do you even know what your mother said no to?" We stayed silent. We didn't even turn around to look at him, as if trying to show just how upset we were. Deep down, all we could think was, We only asked you to do one thing... and even that, you couldn't manage. Perhaps Dad finally felt sorry for us. He called us back with a gentle smile and said, "Come here, silly. Listen carefully. Your mother didn't refuse to go... she refused to stay at home, because she wants to come to the wedding with us too." Without thinking, the first words that escaped our mouths were, "If she doesn't want to stay home... what are we supposed to do?" But the very next second, we realized what he actually meant. And in that instant... Our happiness knew no bounds. We screamed with excitement, jumping around the room. "Dad, we love you!" "Mom, we love you!" Our voices echoed through the house as we celebrated like we'd just won the greatest prize in the world. We looked at Mom and Dad with hearts overflowing with love, then raced out of the room to share the wonderful news with our cousins. Seeing our boundless happiness, Mom and Dad looked completely satisfied with the decision they had made. And when our cousins heard the news, their excitement was just as unforgettable. Smiles were everywhere. Our conversations were filled with dreams of the journey ahead and all the beautiful memories we were certain we were about to make. But none of us—not a single one—had the slightest idea... ...that today's laughter, excitement, and celebration would soon turn into a memory that would haunt us for the rest of our lives. A memory that would leave behind a strange, unshakable fear... one we would never truly escape.
