The story of Evany Cross

Irena was a polite, quiet and trusting woman, she didn’t have much but what she did have, she was willing to give away to anyone. Her job was not the most extravagant, and the clients she often had to work for were often, not the nicest of people to deal with either, but she was happy doing what she loved, which was helping people. Irena and her husband Kenan moved to Brininghum, where they grew up, to have a better life and hoped to extend their family, they were currently undergoing rounds of IVF, and had been unsuccessful with past attempts, in their home town Londgeberry, so now they hoped they would finally become parents. After her usual shift with Mr barker, Irena was excited it was as if her face was glowing as she was finally heading to the family planning clinic. Upon arrival, Dr.P.Marshall had made sure to prep her for the procedure, he prepared his equipment and checked all paperwork was available and ready to be signed. Once the I’s had been dotted and all the T’s were crossed, Irena was ready for her insemination, so Humphry Kissed her on the forehead and told her “No matter what, I shall always be by your side!”, she grinned widely and whispered “forever and a day”? “yes, my love, for eternity” It was as if no 1 could take her down from this high, she smiled all the way home that night, it was as if she already knew, it had worked! She would sing to her stomach and read her books, even though she never showed any signs of getting any bigger, Irena knew, and she knew she was going to have a beautiful baby girl. She became slightly disheartened each month, when Aunt flo came knocking but, she was still so certain she was going to have a baby. Irena went on day after day month after month spreading her light, and her love to whoever she met, she even got herself a brand-new client, which was great because they needed the money. Humphry worked down at the old shoe warehouse and although he made a fair penny, it wasn’t going to make them rich any time soon. The house was taking most of their time and money and with them not having a baby, tensions began to flare. Humphry just really wanted Irena to be a stay at home wife, whilst he brought home the bacon, but Irena was way to independent and outgoing to want to stay at home bare foot and pregnant. “Please, just listen to me, if you really do get pregnant, you will need all the rest you can get….” “Humphry darling…. You know that I believe deep in my heart, that I am with child I've felt different for months, why do you not believe me?” “How could I believe such madness Irena?!.... its just not possible…. I feel like the pressure of wanting a family has turned you insane” “Well thank you…. thank you so much…. for having soooo much faith in me” she said between sobs stomping off to the bathroom “Irena…. I didn’t…. mean…. *water splashing* “Irena? … Irena? Are you ok? He said rushing into the bathroom” what was that?” “Oh my god…. I hate to say I told you so…. but I think…. my waters just broke….” They headed to the hospital, and they had no clue what to do next, who did they call? Where did they have to go? they were new to this and a little bit scared to say the least but, Humphry still tried his best, to make Irena feel safe and at peace, he was brilliant at it and they didn’t know it yet but that would be everything to them in the end. Hours passed and then days, to the point everything seemed to be so surreal, leading them to wonder, if this whole time it was a phantom pregnancy. But little did they know, their entire lives were due to change so rapidly, they would think they dreamt the entire thing. *Evany misunderstood* The days where dark and the nights, were getting lighter by the hour. There was a visible shift in even the smallest of animals, routines and normality, all seemed to have been thrown to the wind, nothing was as it was before. It all began on the night of the 14th of September 2000, at the strike of 8am when Evany Cross was born, a long 7 days after her mothers waters broke. As her screams pierced through the room the cold nights sky became clear, wolves began to howl, thunder began to rumble through the sky and lightning began to strike, as acknowledgement to the birth of this child, they had been expecting her, and little did any human know she had alerted them of her presence. “Awww, she has got the most beautiful eyes” cooed the nurse, as she planted Evany on her mother’s chest. Tears trickled down Irena’s cheeks as she marvelled at the beautiful creature, that lay in her arms looking back at her as if she was smiling right at her. With her big Hazel eyes and plump cheeks, Irena was brimming with pride, she kissed her on the forehead and whispered, “I have waited for you my sweet, I love you”. Time went by and they got better at parenting with time and patience, they were beginning to get the hang of things. At the age of 2 Irena begun to see, what would have been recorded as advanced child behaviour in her, but she quickly realised that Evany was beyond her years. You see, Evany was no ordinary baby, she was quick on her feet and had a way of knowing what was going to be said, and what would happen before it took place. She would pick up on anything that she saw or heard, so they had to be very careful what they exposed her too. Irena would look through her pink book, to view her progression chart and she had already surpassed any average baby by 3 to 4 years, never mind months. So to ease her mind, she went back to the IVF clinic to speak to Dr.P.Marshall . What she would hear, would surely change her life and how she saw things. “Hi doctor, I have a few questions I need answering and somehow I know that you can help me, there is something different about my baby doctor, did you do something? Or did I do something?” “I assure you Mrs Cross, your daughter is perfectly fine….” “Cut it out, what are you not telling me? I know it is something! She is super-fast, like... I mean, lightning fast and have you ever tried to keep up with a regular toddler as it is?!... never mind an even faster one and on top of that, she always knows what is going to happen next, she has the strength of an ox at times and yet, she still manages to remain, so sweet and innocent looking…. “ “Alright Mrs Cross…. Alright…. So there are somethings, I need to tell you……You may, wish to sit down for this!” ****************************** The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth Shocked and confused, Irena sat in the doctor’s office blank of expression, a drift and in a day dream like state just staring at one spot, as Dr.P.Marshall explained the grand plan of things, just like an artist describing his greatest masterpiece. As if she was shocked out of her daydream, she replied, “Hold on a moment, did you just mention my parents? What do they have to do with Evany & even me? I haven’t seen them since the day they carted me off to boarding school, and continued their ever so perfect life without me!” “Oh, but that was all a part of the plan Irena, you have always been a part of the bigger picture, the greater design…. “ “Pfft, oh please…. Its barely been a "picture nevermind perfect"…I am so confused right now….” “Please Irena you must listen to me, her life is extraordinary, but she could be in danger…. you were destined to be her mother, as you have what we like to call the Mary gene…” She thought about it for a moment... “The Mary gene…. are you trying to say that, the reason, it seemed I wasn’t pregnant throughout my entire pregnancy was because of this so-called gene?” “Yes! This initially meant that no one would be able to detect Evany growing inside of you, she has been shielded this entire time, with good reason…. here’s where it gets a little bit crazy. Evany is human, part angel & wolf. She has also been fitted, with an android device in each finger, she is basically what we like to call, our superhero embryo. In the beginning she will age quickly, this is due to the wolf in her genetics and its good at fooling any agents, might they ever become suspicious. The only way they will know, is by the tiny birth mark she yields right above her left knee, this is shaped like and eagle to those that know it. They were aware, of you too, that's why you were sent away for your protection”. “You have got to be kidding me?! this is all too much, to take in at one time, why was I not told about this before, so I could make the decision for myself….?” “Because my dear, she is of you! we chose you from birth, we harvested a few of your eggs, as requested by your parents, they had a tougher fight than they would, or even could tell you as a child. They protected you, in the same way that you have Evany…. And in case you are wondering, yes, you were and possibly still are, one of our superhero embryos. Your parents never understood it at first either, until they came face to face with evil, a great evil that eventually took your fathers life and sent your mother spiralling into insanity, of course, no one would believe her….” “Soooo, your saying I once had these so-called powers?” “you sure did… not the exact same powers but you had them…” “What where they? … no…. you know what…. I have to go…. I need to get out of here.” Irena walked for what seemed like forever, her mind spinning and wondering about the possibility of her having neutralised “powers”, she was battling the idea, but she was also very, intrigued to know what she could actually do, she even wondered if the Doctor knew what her abilities were. How was she going to explain this to Humphry, he didn’t even believe she was pregnant when she had Evany, so telling him about her Mary gene, their daughter’s powers and even the powers that run through her veins, would surely be the icing on the cake. Irena POV “Just when I thought life was starting to feel somewhat normal, I get told super secrets, that don’t exactly fit into the general idea of normal". Heading indoors, she couldn’t even look Humphry in the eyes she just headed straight towards Evany, it was like she was drawn to her like a magnet, she didn’t even hear him ask her “how did it go? are you alright my love? ok... , we will talk about it later if you are up to it?” There was no reply, but he never took it badly, he just carried on into the kitchen to make some coffee. Evany was in the living room, watching one of her cartoons playing along and clapping her hands, but of course, she was already aware her mother was due to arrive. She had placed on the table next to her rocking chair, a drawing of a little girl who was standing there normally, faded out in the next image, then she was gone in the next, leaving only clothes and shoes. Irena couldn’t figure it out to begin with, why would she draw this? What does it even mean? Then it clicked and she began connecting the dots, Evany had given her the answer she had sought after, well at least one of them anyway. She had the power of invisibility. ************************************** The disappearing act Many moons had passed, and Irena was slowly getting used to the idea of giving birth and raising a child with super powers, she had even started practising activating her own powers, may the occasion call for it. She had realised her love for her daughter far outweighed her fears, and no one could hurt her for as long as she was alive. Doctor Marshall was very involved in their lives, and he kept his own records of Evany and Irena’s progress. However, he faced the complicated task of finding a good way to tell them Evany was a twin, you see someone had purposely separated the eggs without his knowledge. He came across her existence shortly after the procedure, whilst he was searching through the notes it read “2 female eggs/twin embryos” this sent panic rushing through his veins, as it dawned on him that, she may well be used as a weapon on the opposite side of the revolution, and someone within the company was a double agent. With this new information Dr Marshall, began searching for Irena’s file and that of the other surrogate mother, he had no doubt in what he would find but, he was shocked by one name in particular. Jotted down on the files, all their names were listed along with abbreviations to their gifts. Alita: - One noble little winged girl filled with flames. Evany: - One Peace maker that is swift on her feet. Irena: - One Deliverer of peace that makes pain disappear……. The next name on the list would leave him standing in shock for a few seconds. “No…. that cannot be…. that’s impossible….” He rushed to the phone “I must call Irena immediately” Across town, Humphry had decided to take his two special girls out for the day, it seemed he was starting to come to terms with the fact, that the ladies in his life were special in more ways than he could have possibly imagined. The day Irena sat him down to explain, why Evany seemed to be exceling beyond her years and also was aging rapidly in such a short width of time, he was so taken a back he didn’t speak for days, after all she was supposed to be 6 and she already had the appearance of a 12 year old, so there was no hiding the fact that she was special. Of course, he had questions, what were her abilities, how did this information come about, the list was endless, but he came through and acted as naturally as he could, considering the circumstances. After a magical afternoon at the fun fair, they left giggling and full of energy. Irena’s phone rang “Dr Marshall…. I wonder what he could want…. Hello” “Hello Mrs Cross?!.... “speaking how are you Dr?” “I am well thank you, I am calling because I need you and Evany to come down to the hospital….” “Is something wrong….” “I'm not sure, I just have some news that I need to tell you face to face, try not to be alarmed, both you and Evany are fine, there is just a matter I have to alert you too". “Sounds serious to me?! Erm.. We will be there in the morning at 10am, if that is alright with you of course?” “That’s perfect, I shall see you then, enjoy the rest of your day” “Ok, take care bye now” “Well that was… a little bit concerning” “What’s the matter my love?” worried Humphry “Oh, that was just the Dr, he wishes to see me and Evany tomorrow, he claims there is nothing to worry about, so I have decided to meet with him in the morning.” “It does sound serious doesn’t it, ok my love I will take you there, not to worry.” Evany sat staring out the window, contemplating if everything she has seen somehow, was connected to the phone call, it wouldn't be the 1st time. Evany POV Yay, mom's home now She can see the drawing of the dream I had, mommy was standing there and then she disappeared, then she came back again like a magic trick, mommy is cool I love my mommy. "Uhhh, does mommy like this drawing?" "It's very good evany... Who is this?" "that's you mommy, you disappeared-ed" Mommys eye popping out she must really like it, "you love it don't you mommy hehe" The journey home was a weird one, they were still buzzing off their day but, at the same time, they had the worry of what lay ahead. That night as they headed in, Evany took her mother and father by the hand, and led them to her room. “Mom, dad, I didn’t wish to worry you with these, but I just have this feeling and its bugging me not to show you, it may be nothing but, these are my recent drawings, I have seen so many things but they are not coming out the way they use too, to be honest my visions are becoming blurred, when ever I have the same reoccurring day dream, the same face stares right back at me in my visions, but the face is mines!” In their hands was a drawing of 2 babies and two women with a very dark cloud surrounding them and a beam of sunlight trying to seep through. “This was my last premonition, then everything went black, like the blackest of night and it felt like I was sinking down into the deepest darkest hole, then I came out of it and all I could do was grab my pencil and paper …. I wonder what it all means, I am so confused right now, normally it’s me who has all the answers”. She tittered slightly The silence was becoming awkward and everybody was starting to show signs of worry, thats when Humphry being Humphry, got up on his feet and declared they all take a moment and have something to eat, maybe that would help them to concentrate on what it could all mean. “We can’t very well get to the bottom of things, on an empty stomach, now can we?” he said nervously laughing and heading towards the kitchen, whilst jerking his head towards the door, gesturing Irena to accompany him. As they left the room, Evany had gotten up and stood in front of the window, “I swear life just seems to get weirder and weirder these days, I mean I know I have a gift, in fact I know I have a few but…” looking down at her hands she couldn’t help but wonder, if she was the only one of her kind, and why she had to be different. *Sigh* A huge bolt of lightning, pierced the night sky and thunder began to bellow shortly behind it, it’s repetition continued for a few more moments, then as the light hit the window, Evany saw what looked like herself, but it wasn’t her reflection, she jumped back ever so slightly in surprise, it was the exact same way she had seen her face in her dream, smirking at her, like her reflection was mocking her, chastising her and then the image faded away. Meanwhile in the kitchen her mother and father, where trying to make sense of all that lay before them, it just didn’t seem to add up. They figured that at least 1 of the women in the picture was more than likely Irena, but what did it even mean? and should they be preparing for the worst. Not wanting to trouble her parents anymore, she decided to go in and say goodnight, she was genuinely tired and didn’t feel very much up to eating tonight. She set herself a bath, wrapped her afro up into a bun and relaxed for a little while, she could hear her parents pacing backwards and forwards, trying to come up with a reasonable explanation. Closing her eyes and playing her music, she blocked all the day’s activities out of her mind, she loved Chase Brunes music, it helped that he was top of the charts at the moment and she loved to relax to his voice. She closed he eyes washing and moving in the water, she was more like a child in that moment, than her appearance would have you believe, as she went to grab the soap it fell off the bath side “oh dam…” bending over to grab it, there she was again in front of her very eyes, she panicked and ended up splashing the water everywhere, she couldn’t scream and she felt like she was stuck to the bottom of the bath, when she went to finally open her mouth, so did the person in front of her but with it, came an almighty scream. Grabbing her headphones, she couldn’t even hear the music anymore, as she went to pull the headphones off and step out to face her, she again faded away, surprisingly she wasn’t afraid of her, she just wanted to know what was going on, it felt like she was losing her mind and hallucinating. Irena and Humphry came bounding up the stairs, “Evany are you ok? why did you scream? What happened?” Bursting into the bathroom, not even thinking there she stood, as naked as the day she was born… “Mooommmm Daaaaddddd” “ Omg… “ Humphry could do nothing but, get out as quick as he had busted in, apologising profusely “I am so sorry darling, omg how embarrassing, I didn’t see anything, just pretend, I never saw a thing….” “yeah right dad, because that’s going to be the easiest thing to forget, ugh, why me! Somebody kill me now” Her mother just stood there, not exactly embarrassed more in disbelief, that her child was becoming a woman, she had not prepared for this, as she never expected her daughter to grow at the rate, she has been for the past couple of years. “Moooom….” “Oh, I’m sorry love, here take this towel I…I will…um... leave you to get dressed.” The bathroom door closed behind her and Evany, placed her face into the towel and did a little screaming, of her own “I have no privacy” she mumbled into it then wrapped herself up. She could hear them behind the door questioning each other “Why didn’t you knock the door?” “I didn’t think to, I just heard screaming…” “Great parents we are, aren’t we? Humphry groaned “Ah, she will get over it dear, these things happen but its safe to say, she's officially becoming a women” Stepping out of the bathroom, she couldn’t even look them in the eyes, sighing she explained what they had heard, and what she had seen both downstairs and in the bathroom. By the time she was done explaining, she was exhausted both physically and mentally. Wishing for sleep and allowing the darkness to consume her, she prepared herself for what her dreams would have in store for her. ********************************************* Preparation is the Key As expected, her dreams wouldn’t disappoint , Evany was again in the same reoccurring dream, looking down on the 2 babies and the 2 women, but this time instead of it just being her looking down at them, to the left side of her, there she was again watching the exact same image in front of them, but as she went to walk towards her, she vanished again this time appearing in front of her, this would happen a few more times, until she started asking who are you? What do you want? Why do you look like me? With that she seemed to look up slightly pointing directly at the babies, then just like that she was gone again, Evany was not satisfied and to be honest, she had started to get a little testy about the whole thing, she didn’t like mind games and she definitely, didn’t like the idea of not knowing and controlling her own destiny. Something was off, and it was not going to be good news, she could feel it in every nerve ending in her body. Just like a wave of electric rushing through her she woke up with a huge growl, something she had never done before or even heard before. “What was that?” she sat up shocked, looking around hoping it had come from somewhere else, luckily, her parents were out back & didnt seem to have heard it. Which was good, she so didn’t need a repeat of last night! She shuddered at the thought. Getting herself dressed in front of the mirror, making sure everything looked good as usual, she noticed an eagle had perched on the tree branch outside of her window, she was mesmerized by it but, as she went to take a step closer to the window it flew away. Bounding down the stairs she headed towards the garden to greet her parents, they had just got back in when they saw her, they couldn’t believe their eyes. “Why are you looking at me like that, I swear you guys just get weirder and weirder….” “Evany?” “Yes mother?” “Have you looked in the mirror today, at any point?” “yeah, I just had a look made sure all my clothes looked good, twisted my hair out and came down here, why?” It seemed that Evany could not yet see, the change in herself and the fact that she now looked like a woman in her 20s, the shock was etched across her parents faces, but no matter how many times she looked at herself she just didn’t see it. “Are you guys just going to stand there looking at me all day, or are we going to see the doctor?” “Ye… erm sure… lets go” they said almost in unison. Dr Marshall was pacing the floor, wondering how best to spill the news to them, he was a ball of anxiety by the time they came in, it was like he just wanted to explode. You see, he wasn’t just a doctor, he was the leading scientist for the G.O.D aka Greatness over Demonic agency and he had never imagined anything as magnificent as Evany was, but the fact that there was two of them, just added to his excitement, but it niggled at him that one would ultimately be used for evil. Stepping into his office Dr Marshall was taken aback by Evany, but he held his composure, every one of them was ultimately on edge, no one spoke for a while till the silence was broken by Evany herself, let’s just say that she was finally over wondering what was going on. “Doctor, please put us out of our misery and tell us what the heck is going on!” “Evany!” “sorry Mom, but this is beginning to send me literally crazy, I mean seeing a image of myself, the screams, the looks the dreams…” Dr Marshall took a seat and rubbed his face, before filling them in on the news he had for them, "ok, so let's start by you calling me Paul please, as I think we are so passed the formalities, with that being said, I believe the reason you are seeing yourself or what seems, to be yourself, is because you are in fact a twin Evany! They all stood there with their mouths wide open, there wasn’t much they could do but listen and take in this new information.
