Chapter 11 Night Crier May had been quiet since the beginning, and just seemed to take it all in stride, but Tom coming home alone had taken her down. She had waited in hand-wringing anticipation for his return and seeing him alone and looking so defeated hit her like a freight wagon. She had said nothing, and tried to do what she needed to do, but when the time seemed right she climbed into the loft where she slept, turned her face to the wall to try to sort out her feelings and decide what she should do. Her prayers had been for Aggie since she went missing, and she somewhat blamed herself for not going with her, but at the same time she knew Aggie well and could tell that she had wanted to go alone. Now she lay in her warm bunk and prayed for Aggie till she cried herself to sleep. T
