Chapter one
The floor-to-ceiling glass walls of the Vance penthouse overlooked the glittering expanse of Manhattan, but to twenty-six-year-old Clara Vance, it still felt like a gilded cage. She stood perfectly still as a stylist adjusted the heavy diamond collar around her neck, mirroring the emerald shade of her silk gala dress. Outwardly, she was the picture of flawless, aristocratic poise. Inwardly, her heart was hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She wasn't thinking about the charity gala, the paparazzi waiting downstairs, or her family's massive corporate empire. She was counting down the seconds until she could slip away to see Jace. Before the chaos began, Helena Vance stepped into the dressing suite, her presence the absolute epitome of high-society grace. She wore a midnight-blue gown, her diamonds catching the light as she offered her daughter a soft, adoring look. Helena walked over, gently smoothing the fabric of Clara's dress. "Let her breathe, everyone. She is already perfect," Helena said softly to the staff, before leaning in to whisper to Clara. "You look beautiful, my darling. Don't let the pressure of tonight steal your smile." Clara smiled back, a wave of affection and a sharp pang of guilt hitting her chest. "Thank you, Mom. I just want everything to go smoothly." The heavy double doors of the dressing suite opened fully, and Victor Vance stepped inside. The moment his commanding frame crossed the threshold, the room fell into a respectful silence. Without a word being spoken, the stylists and assistants immediately bowed their heads, gathered their tools, and quickly filed out of the room as a sign of deep respect for the patriarch of the Vance empire. Victor adjusted his bespoke cuffs, his sharp eyes instantly locking onto his eldest daughter. A warm, genuine smile broke through his normally stern expression, softening the hard lines of his face. "Breathtaking," Victor murmured, walking over and gently placing his hands on Clara’s shoulders. He looked at her reflection in the mirror, his eyes filled with immense pride. "You look absolutely stunning, Clara. Every bit the elegant leader this family needs." "Thank you, Father," Clara smiled back, forcing her voice to remain steady. Her father was unyielding in the boardroom, but his devotion to his children was undeniable. "I just want to make you proud." "You always do, sweetheart," Victor said softly, giving her shoulder a reassuring squeeze before his tone shifted back to his usual authoritative strength. "This evening is about positioning. The board is watching us, and the public is watching you. You carry the Vance name, Clara. Never forget that everything I build, I build to secure your future." Victor turned to wrap an arm around his wife's waist, kissing her cheek. "I am only looking out for our children, Helena." "Speaking of which," Helena smiled, looking back toward the doorway. "Ethan, stop lingering in the hall and come see your sister." Twenty-year-old Ethan Vance stepped into the room, looking exceptionally sharp in his tailored tuxedo. He had his father's tall frame but carried a youthful, easygoing charm. He walked straight over to Clara, a genuine, proud smile on his face as he gave her a gentle side-hug. "You look incredible, Clara," Ethan said, his voice warm. "Seriously, you're going to completely outshine everyone at the gala tonight. The interns at the office won't stop talking about how you're going to run the luxury sector next month." Clara laughed softly, patting her brother's arm. At twenty, Ethan was already learning the ropes at Vance Global, and she loved how supportive he was. "Thank you, Ethan. Make sure you take notes tonight during Father's speech." "Always do," Ethan grinned, adjusting his cuffs. Suddenly, the side door burst open, completely shattering the formal atmosphere. Twenty-four-year-old Eliana Vance sauntered in, completely defying the family’s strict dress code. She hadn't put on her gown yet; instead, she wore a tailored leather blazer, dark denim, and sky-high stilettos, her dark hair tumbling over her shoulders in intentional waves. "Tell me you're not lecturing her before the party even starts, Dad," Eliana joked, throwing herself onto the plush velvet chaise lounge. Ethan chuckled, shaking his head at his sister's predictability. "Eliana, you're cutting it dangerously close. The cars are already idling downstairs." "Relax, little brother, the world won't end if we're five minutes late," Eliana grinned, flashing a sharp, stubborn smirk. She looked at her mother. "But I have a date tonight, Mom. I am not spending the entire night watching elderly billionaires bid on modern art." Victor's societal sigh turned into a fond chuckle, and he walked over to kiss the top of Eliana's head. "You are stubborn, just like your father. Go enjoy your dinner, but stay safe. My security team is always a phone call away." He turned back to Clara, offering his arm, while Helena and Ethan stepped out ahead of them. "Shall we, Clara? Let’s show the world what a Vance looks like." Clara took his arm, her heart full from her family's absolute warmth. Ten minutes later, after walking the red carpet and greeting the first wave of guests alongside her parents and brother, she managed to slip past the cameras and into the back of a waiting town car. Her heart raced with pure anticipation as the driver pulled away, steering her toward a luxury suite on the other side of town.
