Chapter 32 You Have to Trust Me

1393 Words
“Oh, that’s good to hear! So, as for the price...” Matthew asked. “Oh! One-time offer! 188,800.” Lowrance smiled. “Hiss~!” Clare and Natalie whirled with a gasp. A seemingly ordinary set of celadon tea set, only including a teapot and four cups, cost so much money. And such a price was just the beginning of a business. Once the president refused to accept it, or the present was returned after the business failed, the consequence... Matthew also frowned. Obviously, the object he favored was a bit expensive. “Mr. Lowrance, can you give us a discount?” Clare asked nicely. “You must be President Quincy’s daughter, my lady. Here are the rules you might have not heard before.” Lowrance paused. “In Memorials of Ancient and Present, we guarantee to provide you authentic antiques based on our reputation, the prices as well. Every antique is worth the price we branded and we are willing to triple the price if it doesn’t fit its real value!” So, he just declared clearly that the price was not negotiable and his firm would rather not sell it than give a discount or lower the price. Matthew and Clare couldn’t help but shake their heads. At this time, Vincent finally regained his senses and asked, “Mr. Lowrance, may I ask how much is the inkstone?” “What?” The rest looked at the ugly inkstone simultaneously. “You mean this one?” Lowrance pointed to the ugly inkstone in the glass cabinet. “Yeah!” Vincent nodded. “So, my friend, you are still interested in it.” Lowrance smiled. “A bit maybe. I’d like to study it if possible.” Lowrance nodded and pointed at the ugly inkstone, saying, “It’s created in the 19th century. Given its appearance, I’ll say it’s 10,000 tops.” “If so, Uncle Matthew, let’s buy it,” Vincent said. “What?” Carl looked at Vincent as if he was a fool, “What’s your problem to give someone such ugly stuff as a present? Is there something wrong with your brain or my ears?!” “He’s right. I’m afraid it’s not good in appearance!” Natalie looked at Vincent. “I don’t have enough money to buy it. If I may, Uncle Matthew, could you please buy it for me first and then deduct the fee from my salary?” Vincent asked sincerely. “Oh, save it! Deduct it from your salary? Seriously?” Carl was more excited, “Not to mention you may get mad or blind to choose such a thing as a gift, we don’t even know if you can make it to continue your job in the family for a long time. Besides, didn’t they just prepay your salary? What happened to the money? You have spent them all?” Clare couldn’t bear to hear more from Carl, so she said, “That’s enough.” Then she looked toward Vincent, “You like it?” Vincent nodded and then shook his head. What else could he say since he couldn’t tell the secret of the ugly inkstone in public? Even if it was kind of rude to require so on such an occasion and they were not here for shopping but business, “I like it” was all he could say. Matthew was not happy to hear such a request at this time, so he waved his hand, “That can wait. We are here for real business.” Mr. Lowrance, however, smiled and said, “Speaking of which, President Quincy, you too, my friend, you can get the inkstone for free if you spend more than 150,000 here.” “You are not joking?” Vincent was overjoyed and pulled Matthew, “Uncle Matthew, buy the tea set, then we can get the inkstone as well!” “We? You mean you, right? Look at your greedy face!” Carl spoke disparagingly of Vincent. “Will you just shut up?!” Vincent couldn’t stand Carl anymore and shouted at him coldly. Around them, there were people gathering and whispering, seeming like they had learned what was going on here and they did believe the inkstone wasn’t worth collecting even if it was a gift for free. Someone even murmured that “The man must be a rich i***t to value it that much.” Regardless of all the crowd, Vincent focused his gaze on Matthew and Clare sincerely, “Uncle Matthew, Clare...” “What’s happening here?!” Senior Mr. Quincy’s voice sounded. Vincent was delighted to hear his voice. “Grandpa~!” Clare and Natalie greeted him and led him in. The latter was in a tuxedo, walking with a cane, and looked like a powerful man. “Grandpa Quincy!” Carl nodded. “Dad! You are here!” Matthew took two steps forward to greet his father. Lowrance also nodded in greeting. “What’s going on? Why are there so many people gathering here? Is there something special or something?” Senior Mr. Quincy looked around. “Dad, nothing serious. Only we got a problem here.” And then Matthew told him the whole story briefly. Senior Mr. Quincy didn’t expect this, so he looked at Vincent and then walked forward to watch the tea set for a while. After that, he took a look at the ugly inkstone, nodded, and came back to them. “The texture of the tea set is worth the price,” Senior Mr. Quincy then looked at Vincent, “Vincent, my grandson-in-law, you like that inkstone?” “Yes.” Vincent nodded. Seeing Vincent still insisting on his weird request, Natalie teased nicely, trying to save him from further embarrassment, “Rascal, let’s focus on real business, shall we?” “Yeah, don’t you know that beggars can’t choose? Aren’t you ashamed to ask for a thing without a penny? You are really helping yourself!” Carl was still mean. “Ahh!” Senior Mr. Quincy snorted and stared at both of them, then he nodded and beckoned Matthew. “Matthew, go buy the tea set you choose. You are buying it anyway. Now that they are willing to give you the inkstone as a gift, go ahead and give it to Vincent as a present. He’s your son-in-law after all.” “Dad.” Matthew shook his head helplessly, “It’s not I don’t want to buy it for him. But we got a real business to do here and I’m distracted. Can’t he just wait?” “Wait for what?” Senior Mr. Quincy was annoyed all of a sudden, “Why didn’t you wait when someone paid our bill last night and then half the rent? Aren’t you guilty to do this to him? Look at yourself, Matthew! Fine, I’ll buy it then.” Senior Mr. Quincy was about to take out his bank card. Vincent stopped Senior Mr. Quincy from doing so and whispered to the family, not including Carl of course, “Grandpa, Uncle, Clare, and Natalie, you have to trust me on this! Go buy the inkstone!” The four were stunned to hear that. Vincent said in a low voice, and then played as a child and shouted normally, “Wow, you are the best, Grandpa! Let’s get it! I like the ugly things best even if it is just good enough to be a bedpan!” “Hahahaha!” People around them laughed, but they meant more of a mockery of disdain and contempt. “Stupid! A rich child, I guess! A rich child and a stupid father as well! The world is so unfair to gift those idiots so much money! Can’t they show mercy to the poor people?” People judged from aside. But Vincent ignored them all and only pretended to be delighted.
