Chapter 5: An Intern

1250 Words
Seeing that the old man was in position, Vincent did not delay, supporting him with one hand and focusing the power of decomposition to flow through his fingers. In reality, Vincent's mind was foggy, and his body was performing all on its own. However, Vincent had no time to ponder this right now; a man’s life was at stake and as a doctor, it was his duty to try and save his life.   With all the people surrounding him, Vincent pressed constantly on the old man’s “acupoints” where the stones were seriously blocked. In reality, he pressed at the spots randomly and casually, but in others’ eyes, he wanted to seem skillful when doing this, especially in front of Mr. Martin.   “Oh! Ouch! Ouch? Ahhhh! Hey!” The old man screamed in pain which ensured Vincent the decomposition was working. His power decomposed more than half of the stones around the old man’s lower abdomen within a minute. Yes, only half of it, because Vincent was not very proficient in using it yet, and it cost him some of his own energy.   Vincent then untied Mr. Johnson’s pants; with the power left, he could only decompose half of the stones and make the rest half the size. Luckily, that would be enough to save the old man’s life!   The old man shuddered suddenly. And then, the unprecedented desire to micturate occurred to him and the unbearable pain disappeared. “What…?” The old man mumbled, feeling sleepy all of a sudden as if he had run a very long marathon. “I…I need to pee…”   Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Brown hurried to turn around in embarrassment. Chairman Martin understood what his father was saying immediately, so he held the bag with both hands and put it in front of his father. The occupants stood there awkwardly as they listened to the sounds of the old man’s urine filling up the bag. The men could even see small sediments being emitted as well, the decomposed stones, most probably.     Chairman Martin had a look of surprise and admiration as he stared at the small rocks. Having watched how his father had suffered because of this, Chairman Martin knew too well of the pills his father had taken, the drips he had injected, and the foods he had been forbidden to eat. Surgery was the only method they had not tried only for the sake of his age! Now, witnessing how easy it was for a young man to solve this in such an emergency, how could he remain calm and not be shocked?   The old man felt so comfortable and relaxed, more than he had felt in a few days. “Son…I...I feel so much better…much better than before…” “Dad? Are you... recovered? Does it hurt anywhere?” Chairman Martin held his father’s hand, with the amount of care that a son has when he has seen his father near death just a few seconds before. The old man tried to gather himself before sitting up slowly. He wiped the cold sweat from his forehead, turned around, and grabbed Vincent’s hand. “Boy! You are amazing! You, you, you... how did you cure me? What you just did to me... is much more efficient than my staying in this damn hospital for more than half a year.” The dean and Mr. Johnson flushed upon hearing this.   “Uncle, what I did is... well, you know, our national quintessence, medical acupuncture, that is... tore your stones... um... into smaller size...” Vincent rubbed his head to make up a lie. “Oh, good! That’s very good! What a capable young man! You just showed how practical our culture is!” The old man grabbed Vincent’s hand and held it tight, and then looked back at Chairman Martin. “Son, we owe him! It is fair to say that he saved your old man’s life today!”   Chairman Martin nodded eagerly and stood up, grasping Vincent’s hand as well, “Man, thank you! You... speaking of which, what is your name?” “Chairman Martin, I’m honored,” Vincent replied gratefully. At least one thing had gone right with Vincent so far. “My name is Vincent, Vincent Wayne.” “Vincent, well done! What you just did is amazing, you know? You are my benefactor! You are… You have no idea what a big favor you have done for me! If anything happened to my father, I would...I would have never forgiven myself!”   Chairman Martin looked quite ashamed and angry for not “taking good care of his father”, so the old man patted him on the shoulder. “Son! Don’t say that, you were born to better the society! Don’t worry about me. See? I’m safe and sound!” The old man talked and smiled as if he was not the one who had almost faced death just now. What a nice man, Vincent thought!   “You are right, Dad!” Chairman Martin nodded and wiped his eyes; the occupants were surprised to see his eyes glistening with unshed tears. He then held Vincent’s hand again, “Vincent, what do you do for a living?”   Before Vincent could speak, the dean, who had been stunned by Vincent’s skills, finally came to his senses. He hurried over and spoke not wanting to be left out of the spotlight. “Oh, Chairman Martin!! Speaking of this, you will have to thank our hospital!” “Huh?” Chairman Martin frowned and looked back at the man. How so? Just because they had used his place and the sickbed? The dean continued with a smug look, “Don’t you know? Vincent is an intern at our hospital! Am I right, deputy director?” The dean nudged Mr. Johnson who stood beside him for agreement, and the latter finally talked as if he had been fed s**t, “Yeah, yes… an intern…”   “Is that so?” This time Chairman Martin and the old man were surprised, looking back at Vincent with a smile. “You are an intern in this hospital! No wonder you have your tricks! Nice job, man! Although the hospital is barely good, in terms of recruiting talents...” Before Chairman Martin finished, Vincent sneered and shook his head, “No, I’m not an intern here.” “What?” Everyone looked dumbfounded, while those who knew the truth remained silent, especially Mr. Johnson who had fired Vincent. “What do you mean, Vincent? What is all this?” Chairman Martin and the old man were a little confused. The dean also looked at Vincent in astonishment, staring at him as if Vincent were a man who was about to forget his roots once he got his accomplishments.   Vincent shook his head calmly, took out the notification, which was crumpled into a ball by Lora, unfolded it, and waved. “See? Mr. Johnson here just gave this to me saying I was fired for failing the internship.” Vincent smiled, crumpled it into a ball again with distinct scorn, and then threw it into the wastebasket.
