At school, Teddy had lunch with Tem, and afterwards they plotted when they could next play with the amulets. Tem's dad worked weekends. Maybe if his mom went shopping on Saturday they could steal into the study. They only needed a short amount of time. They wanted to see if the amulets behaved in the same way again. Then doubts crept in. They needed to know more, but what exactly?
Teddy saw Jesse briefly at school and decided to walk the long way home. If she also went that way he would have more time to talk to her. He began to think that Jesse was another mystery.
"Hi, Jesse," he said, when he saw her, surprised by the lump in his throat. "You just can't stop sitting under trees, can you?" He couldn't resist teasing her.
"They're happy to be alive. I see them as my friends."
