16 “Come with me, Allison,” Dia said, exchanging a glance with Mona. “Dia,” Mona said, “I forgot my com back at the Thompson's. Go on without me.” Ten minutes before, we three had left the Thompson's, and we'd nearly reached the gravrail station when the twins had stopped. “All right. We'll see you when you get there.” Mona waved and turned around, striding swiftly away. “This way, Allison,” Dia said. She led me, not toward the gravrail station, but parallel to the rail. I glanced toward the station, only a few hundred meters away, then followed Dia, wondering where she was taking me. The path Dia had taken led downward, between two houses along a narrow, steep descent flanked by two tall hedges. They planned this, I thought.
